Graduated in MEDICINE in 1981, Medical Residency in Pathological Anatomy in1984 and Master in Human Pathology in 1989 all at the Federal University of Bahia. Did his Ph.D in Pathology at the King's College, University of London (1995) and did a Post-Doctorate in Immunology at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Institute Gonçalo Moniz (IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA). Currently woks as Senior Researcher at Fundação Oswaldo Cruz and as an Adjoining Professor of Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA). He coordinates the Program to support the diagnostic development in Liver and Renal Pathology at IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA, in which he is also responsible for the diagnosis, training of specialists and for a continuing education program in Nephropathology. His research interests are on cell migration and tissue remodelling in chronic inflammatory diseases, focusing on histological markers in glomerular disease and splenic lymphoid remodelling in leishmaniasis. Currently, he maintains three research lines related to three research projects: PathoSpotter, which deals with the translation of glomerular histological lesions into computational language, LXPLEEN, which studies the remodelling of splenic compartments in visceral leishmaniasis and its relationship with the severity of disease and RIMFAL that studies potential genetic determinants in the progression of kidney diseases in African-Brazilians. He was editor of the Brazilian Journal of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 2005 to 2007, returning as an assistant editor from 2016. He held the position of Deputy Director of Education and Information at IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA between March 2009 and May 2013 and the Head of the Laboratory of Pathology and Bio-Intervention (LPBI, IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA) from 2013 to 2015. Currently, he heads the Laboratory of Structural and Molecular Pathology at IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA.

Coordena o Programa de apoio ao desenvolvimento diagnóstico em Patologia Hepática e Renal do IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA, no qual é também responsável pelo diagnóstico, formação de especialistas e por um programa de educação continuada em Nefropatologia. Tem interesse de pesquisa em migração celular e remodelamento tecidual em inflamações crônicas, com foco em marcadores histológicos em nefropatias e remodelamento linfoide esplênico na leishmaniose. Mantém, no momento, três linhas de pesquisas relacionadas três projetos de pesquisa: PathoSpotter-K, que lida com a tradução de lesões histológicas glomerulares em linguagem computacional, LXPLEEN, que estuda remodelação de compartimentos esplênicos na leishmaniose visceral e sua relação com a gravidade da doença e RIMFAL que estuda potenciais determinantes genéticos na progressão de doenças renais em afro-brasileiros. Foi editor do Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial no período de 2005 a 2007, retornando como editor adjunto a partir de 2016. Ocupou a posição de Vice-Diretor de Ensino e Informação do IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA entre março de 2009 e maio de 2013 e a Chefia do Laboratório de Patologia e Bio-Intervenção (LPBI, IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA) de 2013 a 2015. Atualmente ocupa a chefia do Laboratório de Patologia Estrutural e Molecular do IGM, FIOCRUZ-BA.
