Sílvio Mendes Zancheti

Sílvio Mendes Zancheti holds a Bachelors degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the State University of São Paulo (1975, USP, Brazil), received his Master Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Manchester (1978, UK) and his PhD in Urban Planning from the USP (1989). He followed a post-doctoral research program at ICCROM (1995/96) and was a Getty Conservation Scholar (2009).In 2012, he retired from the Federal University of Pernambuco as full professor. He lectured and researched at the Graduated Program in Urban Development of the Federal University of Pernambuco (Recife, Brazil) for over thirty years, where he was also the Head of the UNESCO Chair on Urban Conservation.He was the founder and President of the Administration Council Center for Advanced Studies in Integrated Conservation (CECI). Presently he is the Director General of Ceci.Silvio?s past projects includes the coordination of the Revitalization Plan of the Historic Center of Recife, the Master Plan of Recife, The Master Plan of Olinda (World Heritage Site), the Master Plan of the City of Floriano, and the Nomination Project of the Old City of Piranhas for the List of National Monuments of Brazil and developed its Conservation Management Plan.Recently he has coordinated, for the World Monument Fund and the CECI, the Conservation Master Plan of the Convent of Saint Francis (Olinda, Brazil) and the restoration of two larges 18th Century ceiling paintings and the altarpiece of the Saint Roque Chapel of the Convent. During 2012 he coordinated the restoration of the Saint John Church in Olinda, one of the oldest temples in Olinda.His teaching experience includes international training programs for urban conservation at ICCROM in Rome; with the African Heritage Fund in Mozambique, and the Javeriana University in Bogota (Colombia).He has worked as consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank Silvio has edited eight books and published more than eighty articles in scientific journals on conservation theory, urban conservation, urban history and heritage conservation and restoration, urban planning and urban economics.He is the Chief Editor of City & Time and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainable Development.
