Biomedical Science graduate from the Escola Paulista de Medicina (EPM) (1984), with a master's degree (1989) and a doctorate in Molecular Biology (1996) from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), a master's degree in History of Science (2001) from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). She did postdoctoral work at EPM-UNIFESP (1997) and at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) / Harvard Medical School (2001-2003). She is a Full Professor of the Discipline of Molecular Biology at the Department of Biochemistry, advisor (since 2001), coordinator (2015-2022) and vice-coordinator (2022-current) of the Graduate Program in Molecular Biology at EPM-UNIFESP and member of the management committee of PROFBIO (Professional Master in Biology Teaching, UFMG). She is the coordinator of the INCT MODEL3D (National Institute of Science and Technology in Modelling Human Complex Diseases with 3D Platforms), she is a researcher at the INCT REGENERA (Regenerative Medicine) and at the RNTC (National Cell Therapy Network). She is the president of SBBC (Brazilian Society of Cellular Biology; 2020-2022; 2022-2024) and 1st treasurer of SBPC (Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science; 2021-2023). She is dedicated to neurobiology, studying neurogenesis in response to CNS injuries and neurodegenerative diseases; tissue bioengineering applied to the CNS, and fabrication of CNS biomimetic systems.

É coordenadora do INCT MODEL3D (Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Modelagem de Doenças Humanas Complexas com Plataformas 3D), pesquisadora do INCT REGENERA (INCT em Medicina Regenerativa) e da RNTC (Rede Nacional de Terapia Celular). É presidente da SBBC (Sociedade Brasileira de Biologia Celular; 2020-2022; 2022-2024) e 1a tesoureira da SBPC (Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência; 2021-2023). Tem se dedicado à neurobiologia, atuando principalmente no estudo da neurogênese em resposta a lesões no SNC e doenças neurodegenerativas; bioengenharia tecidual aplicada ao SNC; e fabricação de sistemas biomiméticos do SNC.
