RAUL CORRêA RIBEIRO

I am a Member in the Department of Oncology at St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and professor and supervisor at the PhD Program in Pediatrics, Faculdades Pequeno Príncipe, Curitiba, Brazil. I have served as the Director of the St. Jude International Outreach Program (1997 through 2013) and Director of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Division (2006 through 2013). I also created the educational website denominated Cure4Kids. For the past 31 years, my goals have been to improve the survival of children with malignancies by engaging in clinical research adapting therapy according to disease genotypes. With collaborators in Brazil and Egypt, we have found that specific subsets of acute lymphoblastic leukemia can be identified by simple flow cytometric assays and cured with relatively mild chemotherapy regimens. In collaboration with Brazilian and international investigators, new options for the genetic diagnosis and treatment of acute promyelocytic have been elaborated. A cluster of adrenocortical tumor (ACT) in southern Brazil led us to the discovery of a new inherited genetic alteration (R337H TP53 mutation). Current research efforts include the International Registry for ACT, genome-wide studies to understand phenotype/genotype correlates with this and other TP53 mutations, and new approaches for the treatment of acute pediatric myeloid leukemia. The H-index is 59.
