Sergio Augusto Barreto da Fontoura

Graduated in Civil Engineering from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, PUC-Rio, (1972), MSc. in Civil Engineering also from PUC-Rio (1974) and PhD in Civil Engineering (Rock mechanics) from the University of Alberta, Canada (1980). He is an Associate Professor at the Civil Engineering Department, PUC-Rio. His main areas of interest cover a wide range of rock mechanics application in underground excavations, rock slope engineering, wellbore construction and reservoir engineering. He coordenates the Graduate Lato Sensu Program in Petroleum Engineering at PUC-Rio and is the Faculty Sponsor of the SPE Student Chapter at PUC-Rio. He is the present President of the Brazilian Rock Mechanics Committee (2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016) and voting delegate representing Brazil at the Council of the International Society for Rock Mechanics. Currently is Full member of the Rock testing Commission of ISRM and the Chairman of the Petroleum Geomechanics Commission of ISRM.

Possui graduação em Engenharia Civil pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1972), mestrado em Engenharia Civil pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1974) e doutorado em Civil Engineering - University of Alberta, Canada (1980). Atualmente é Professor Associado da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Tem experiência nas áreas de Engenharia Civil, Mineração e de Petróleo com ênfase em Mecânica das Rochas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: geomecânica do petróleo, estabilidade de poços, comportamento de folhelhos, engenharia de reservatório, estabilidade de taludes e escavações subterrâneas. É coordenador do curso de especialização em Engenharia de Petróleo da PUC-Rio e Faculty Sponsor do Capítulo Estudantil da Society of Petroleum Engineers na PUC-Rio. É Presidente do Comitê Brasileiro de Mecânica das Rochas (2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2015-2016) e Delegado Votante no Council da International Society for Rock Mechanics. É Chairman da Petroleum Geomechanics Commission da International Society for Rock Mechanics e Chairman da ISRM Young Member Commission. Foi eleito Vice-Presidente da ISRM para a América do Sul para o período 2015 - 2019.
