Mônica A. Haddad is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at Iowa State University (ISU), where she specializes in geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial analysis applications for community and regional planning issues. She is the Director of Certificate Studies in GIS at ISU, and every summer she offers GIS workshops for American Planning Association members. Her research agenda focuses on four main issues, related to: 1) social justice in both Brazil and the U.S.; 2) environmental planning in Brazilian cities; 3) urban infrastructure provision in Brazilian cities; and 4) the bioeconomy in the American Midwest. Dr. Haddad frequently uses GIS as part of the methodological approach for her research projects. Her work has been published in journals such as Economic Development Quarterly, Journal of International Development, Biomass and Bioenergy, and Ecological Indicators. Her current research projects include analyzing housing voucher distribution in the San Francisco Bay region, and understanding how cash conditional programs recipients are included, or not, in the labor market. She annually alternates her teaching tasks focusing on advanced GIS, social justice and planning, and qualitative and quantitative methods.
