Maria Cecilia Trindade de Castro

Cecilia has a BSc Degree in Oceanography and a MSc Degree in Environmental Engineering both from the University of Rio de Janeiro State - UERJ. She joined the Brazilian Navy as an Oceanographer in 1998. Previous works include a position as an advisor to the Superintendence of Environment of the Directorate of Ports and Coasts - Navy of Brazil for coastal habitats, marine invasive species and sea dumping issues from 2003 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015 she coordinated the Brazilian Coordinating Committee of the International Maritime Organization Affairs (SecIMO) for the Prevention Pollution and Response (PPR Subcommittee (former BLG) and for the London Convention / London Protocol on Dumping at Sea. During the period between 2010 and 2017 she was a delegate of the Brazilian Delegation to IMO. Main areas of expertise include Biological Oceanography, Marine Environment Protection and Management, Biological Invasions and Environmental affairs. In 2011 Cecilia was selected to join the The United Nations - The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme on Human Resources Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World's Oceans. Between 2015 - 2018 she pursued a PhD on Marine Sciences at Plymouth University in collaboration with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Plymouth, United Kingdom. Back in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2018, and since January, 2019, she has occupied the position of Head of the Department of Environmental Affairs for the Coastal zone and the Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters, in the Superintendence of Environment, Directorate of Ports and Coasts (Brazilian Maritime Authority).

Main areas of expertise include Biological Oceanography, Marine Environment Protection and Management and Maritime Policy. In 2011 Cecilia was selected to join the The United Nations - The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme on Human Resources Development and Advancement of the Legal Order of the World's Oceans. Since April, 2015 she has pursued a PhD on Marine Sciences at Plymouth University / Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Plymouth, United Kingdom.
