Prof. Dra. Maria Gabriela Caffarena Celani

Gabriela Celani holds a BA and MSC in Architecture and Urban Design from FAU-USP and a PhD from MIT, where she was supervised by William Mitchell and Terry Knight. Since 2004 she is a researcher and professor at the Architecture and Urban Design program at Unicamp, where she created the Laboratory of Automation and Prototyping for Architecture and Construction (LAPAC), and where she is currently a full professor. She teaches in the undergraduate and graduate levels, developing research in the fields of digital manufacturing, automation of the design process, shape grammar and algorithmic-parametric design, in a transversal way to Architecture and Urban Design. At Unicamp, she was an advisor to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and to the Rector, and Director of Projects at the Exploratory Science Museum, and is presently heading the Physical-Spatial component of the International Hub for Sustainable Development (HIDS) project. She is the author of the book CAD Criativo (Elsevier, 2003) and translated the books The logic of architecture and The poetics of gardens into Portuguese. She was a funded visiting professor at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Argentina), at the Technical University of Lisbon and at MIT. She was responsible for projects funded by FAPESP, CAPES, FAEPEX and CNPq, involving national and foreign universities, such as Coimbra, Lisbon, Melbourne, Braunschweig and Kaiserslautern. She is a member of the scientific committees of the Design Computing and Cognition, SIGraDi, eCAADe, CAADRIA, ASCAAD and CAAD Futures congresses. She was vice president of SIGraDi and is currently vice president of CAAD Futures. She was a guest speaker at the following events: Digital fabrication: a state of art (Lisbon, 2011), SIGraDi 2012 congress (Fortaleza), Sustainable Intelligent Manufacturing (Lisbon, 2013), Digital D'Arq (Coimbra, 2015) and SIGraDi/eCAADe 2019 (Porto). She chaired CAAD Futures 2015 (São Paulo) and BRAGFOST 2016 (Campinas). She received the Arturo Montagú (Sigradi, 2017) and Zeferino Vaz (Unicamp, 2018) awards for her academic career.

Gabriela Celani é arquiteta e mestre pela FAU-USP e PhD pelo MIT, onde foi orientada por William Mitchell e por Terry Knight. Desde 2004 é pesquisadora e docente do curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da Unicamp, onde criou o Laboratório de Automação e Prototipagem para Arquitetura e Construção (LAPAC), e onde atualmente é professora titular. Atua na graduação e na pós-graduação, desenvolvendo pesquisa nas áreas de fabricação digital, automação do processo de projeto, gramática da forma e projeto algorítmico-paramétrico, de maneira transversal à Arquitetura e Urbanismo. Na Unicamp, foi assessora do Pró-reitor de Graduação e do Reitor e Diretora de Projetos do Museu Exploratório de Ciências, e atualmente coordena a componente Físico-Espacial do projeto do Hub Internacional para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (HIDS). É autora do livro CAD Criativo (Elsevier, 2003) e traduziu para o português os livros The logic of architecture e The poetics of gardens. Foi professora visitante, com financiamento, na Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Argentina), na Universidade Técnica de Lisboa e no MIT. Foi coordenadora de projetos financiados pela FAPESP, CAPES, FAEPEX e CNPq, envolvendo universidades nacionais e estrangeiras, como Coimbra, Lisboa, Melbourne, Braunschweig e Kaiserslautern. É membro dos comitês científicos dos congressos Design Computing and Cognition, SIGraDi, eCAADe, CAADRIA, ASCAAD e CAAD Futures. Foi vice-presidente do SIGraDi e é atualmente vice-presidente do CAAD Futures.
