André Luis da Silva Grützmann Januário
As an artist with an established reputation in music performance and instrumental conducting and with a comprehensive and multicultural background in music teaching, André Januário has performed as a bassoonist and as a conductor throughout Brazil, as well as in the United States, Argentina, and France. As a chamber musician, his performances have been broadcast on WPLN in Nashville, Tennessee - USA, Radio MEC Rio de Janeiro- Brazil, and U92 FM, West Virginia - USA.
Dr. Januário held positions as assistant principal bassoon at the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro Symphony Orchestra, one of South America's most distinguished opera and ballet houses, as well as principal bassoon at Caxias do Sul Symphony Orchestra (OSUCS) and at Theatro São Pedro Chamber Orchestra in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Throughout his career, Dr. Januário has played under the baton of remarkable maestros such as Kurt Masur, Silvio Barbato, Claude Villaret, Roberto Minczuk, Ligia Amadio, and John Neschling.
In addition, his career as a conductor includes positions as music director in ensembles such as the University of Caxias do Sul Youth Orchestra and Morgantown Community Orchestra. Currently, he has collaborated as a bassoonist and assistant conductor with the Waukesha Area Symphonic Band in Wisconsin, and with other symphonic ensembles in the Milwaukee area.
Combining his artistic and pedagogical experience, Dr. Januário has developed a creative academic curricular framework focused on 21st-century artistic and professional demands. In his academic career, he has worked as a bassoon, chamber music, and music studies professor in institutions such as Middle Tennessee State University, West Virginia University Community Music Program, University of Caxias do Sul School of Music, among other conservatories and music programs.
Originally from Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil, Dr. Januário began his bassoon studies with Noël Devos. He received his B.M. in Bassoon Performance and additional studies in orchestral conducting from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where he studied with Aloysio Fagerlande and Ernani Aguiar, respectively. He completed his Master's and Doctoral degrees in Bassoon Performance with Secondary Performance in Conducting at West Virginia University, where his professors were Lynn Hileman, Scott Tobias, Mitchell Arnold, and Kym Scott, respectively.
