Rachel Ifanger Albrecht

A Profa. Dra. Rachel Ifanger Albrecht é docente do Departamento de Ciências Atmosféricas da Universidade de São Paulo onde lidera grupo de estudantes de pós-graduação e graduação em física de nuvens e eletricidade atmosférica. Seus interesses de pesquisa e ensino incluem a física dos raios e da precipitação, as interações entre nuvem-aerossol-precipitação em convecção profunda, sensoriamento remoto da precipitação e dos raios para melhorar a previsão em curto prazo de tempestades severas. Nos últimos 17 anos, ela participou e liderou experimentos de campo no Brasil para investigar a microfísica das nuvens e precipitação, a física dos raios e a variabilidade das tempestades. Ela é membro do time científico do GOES-R GLM (Geostationary Lightning Mapper) e também está envolvida nas atividades de pesquisa dos satélites Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) e Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) da NASA. É co-presidente do Nowcasting and Mesoscale Research Working Group da WMO e membro do IAMAS International Commission on Clouds and Precipitation. Recebeu títulos de Bacharel (2000), Mestre (2004) e Doutor (2008) em Meteorologia pela Universidade de São Paulo. Antes de se juntar ao corpo docente da Universidade de São Paulo em 2014, ela foi Pesquisadora Associada do Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) da NOAA na Universidade de Maryland, E.U.A., de 2008 a 2010, e Pesquisadora do Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos (CPTEC) do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) de 2010 a 2014.

Prof. Rachel I. Albrecht leads a cloud physics and electrification research group of graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her research and teaching interests include lightning and precipitation physics, cloud-aerosol-precipitation interactions in deep convection, land-atmosphere interactions, and remote sensing of precipitation and lightning to improve the short-range forecasts of severe storms. Over the past 17 years, she has participated in and led field campaigns in Brazil to investigate cloud and precipitation microphysics, lightning physics and thunderstorm variability using radars, satellites, aircrafts, and ground-based in situ instrumentation. She is a member of GOES-R GLM (Geostationary Lightning Mapper) Science Team, and also involved in NASA?s Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite missions research activities. She is co-chair of WMO Nowcasting and Mesoscale Research Working Group, as well as member of the IAMAS International Commission on Clouds and Precipitation (ICCP). Prof. Albrecht received her B.S. in Meteorology (2000), M.S. in Meteorology (2004) and Ph.D. in Meteorology (2008) from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Prior to joining University of Sao Paulo faculty staff in 2014, she was a Research Associate at NOAA Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) at University of Maryland, U.S.A., from 2008-2010, and a Research Scientist at the Center for Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC) at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) from 2010-2014.
