João de Castro Maia Veiga de Figueiredo

João Figueiredo has a PhD in High Studies in History - Empire, Politics and Post-colonialism (2016) from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Has a BA - hons. in Anthropology from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, and a post-graduate diploma in Human Rights and Democratization from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra. His dissertation was entitled "Política, Escravatura e Feitiçaria em Angola (séculos XVIII e XIX)" [Politics, Slavery and Witchcraft in Angola (18th and 19th centuries)], and was supervised by Professor Fernando Catroga from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra. An integrated member of the Centre of 20th Century Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Coimbra (CEIS20-UC), and a collaborator of The Centre for History of Society and Culture of the University of Coimbra (CHSC). Member of the Associazione per gli Studi africani in Italia (ASAI); the African Studies Association of the United Kingdom (ASAUK); the Portuguese Anthropological Association (APA); the History of Anthropology Network (HOAN) of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA); and the Royal African Society (RAS). His main research interests are the History of Angola and West African History, the History of slavery and the slave trade, and the Historical Anthropology of African religious practices and beliefs, as well as Afro-Brazilian ones. He uses methods from Historical Anthropology, as well as Cultural History and History of Ideas.

João Figueiredo é doutorado em Altos Estudos em História, ramo Império, Política e Pós-colonialismo (2016) pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal. Possui graduação em Antropologia pela Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (2005), e pós-graduação em Direitos Humanos e Democracia (2006) pela Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra. A sua dissertação de doutorado é intitulada "Política, Escravatura e Feitiçaria em Angola (séculos XVIII e XIX)", e foi orientada pelo Prof. Doutor Fernando Catroga da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. É investigador integrado do Centro de Estudos Interdisciplinares do Século XX da Universidade de Coimbra (CEIS20-UC), e colaborador do Centro de História da Sociedade e da Cultura da Universidade de Coimbra (CHSC-UC). Membro da Associazione per gli Studi africani in Italia (ASAI); da Associação Portuguesa de Antropologia (APA), da Royal African Society do Reino Unido (RAS), da African Studies Association of the United Kingdom (ASAUK) e da History of Anthropology Network (HOAN) da European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA). Dedica-se ao estudo da História de Angola e da África Ocidental, ao da escravatura e tráfico negreiro, bem como à das crenças religiosas africanas e afro-brasileiras. Adopta métodos da Antropologia Histórica e da História Cultural e das Ideias.
