Rui Miguel Gil da Costa Oliveira

Rui M. Gil da Costa graduated as a veterinary surgeon in 2003 from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal. After practicing as an official veterinary surgeon in the United Kingdom, he took a MSc degree in Oncology, a Residency in Veterinary Pathology and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto's Abel Salazar Institute for Biomedical Sciences. He undertook post-doctoral studies first at the University of Porto Faculty of Engineering and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology and then at Dr. Peter Nelson's lab (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center). He was a Senior Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Maranhão (São Luís, Brazil). He supervises two PhD students and one MSc student. His work, largely focused on translational cancer research, originated over 100 indexed scientific papers with h index = 25 (Scopus), and is centered on GU and HPV-related malignancies. His main achievements include the development of the first mouse model for HPV-related penile cancer, the experimental demonstration of the etiologic role of HPV16 in penile and oropharyngeal carcinogenesis, and the discovery of a squamocolumnar junction in von Ebner's gland which may explain why HPV16-induced cancers specifically target the tongue base along with other oropharyngeal sites. He also contributed to clarify the role of ptaquiloside, a carcinogenic toxin from Pteridium spp. in cancer causation, demonstrating its interaction with papillomavirus to induce squamous cell carcinomas of the upper digestive tract.In close cooperation with colleagues from the Harvard Medical School, he worked on the pre-clinical development of a new anti-neoplastic drug for use in combination with current platinum-based drugs. Results from his research supported a recent FDA approval for clinical trials.

Rui M. Gil da Costa licenciou-se em Medicina Veterinária em 2003, pela Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal). Após exercer Medicina Veterinária no Reino Unido, realizou a Residência em Patologia Veterinária, o Mestrado em Oncologia e o Doutorado em Ciências Biomédicas no Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel da Universidade do Porto. Ao longo do seu trabalho com modelos de doenças, espontâneos e induzidos, publicou 3 capítulos de livro, mais de 100 artigos científicos (índice h=25, Scopus) e numerosas apresentações em congressos, que reflectem uma abordagem comparativa à morfologia animal e humana. Foi investigador de Pós-doutoramento no LEPABE (Faculdade de Engenharia - Universidade do Porto) e no Centro de Investigação do Instituto Português de Oncologia do Porto - CI-IPOP. Em seguida, realizou Pós-Doutoramento no Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (EUA), mantendo colaborações com esta instituição e com a Harvard Medical School na área do câncer génito-urinário e desenvolvimento de fármacos. Leccionou em várias universidade portuguesas bem como no Brasil, onde foi Professor Visitante Sénior no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde do Adulto/Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA). Tem experiência na formação de recursos humanos a nível de iniciação científica, graduação, mestrado, Doutorado e pós-doutorado em instituições em Portugal e no Brasil. Os seus interesses de investigação abrangem a histologia e patologia básica e translacional, com ênfase na patologia das neoplasias génito-urinárias.
