Fraya Frehse

Fraya Frehse is an Associate Professor of Sociology (of the City, of Space and of Everyday Life) at the University of São Paulo (USP) (https://sociologia.fflch.usp.br/frayafrehse), where she got a BA and a teaching diploma in the Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology and Political Science), an MA and a PhD in Social Anthropology including a six-month Visiting PhD Student stay at the University of Oxford, at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and Freie Universität Berlin. As an alumna of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, a Productivity Research Fellow of the Brazilian Research Foundation (CNPq) and a life member of the University of Cambridge Clare Hall College, at USP Frehse coordinates the Centre for Studies and Research on the Sociology of Space and Time (NEPSESTE) and the Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability, which is based at the Technische Universität Berlin (https://gcsmus.org/people/prof-dr-fraya-frehse/). Moreover, she is a member of the Program Global Cities at the USP Institute of Advanced Studies (http://www.iea.usp.br/pesquisa/projetos-institucionais/usp-cidades-globais/integrantes/participantes). Fraya Frehse was a Visiting Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin, at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, at Université Paris Diderot, at the Universität Wien, at Technische Universität Berlin and the University of Cambridge. Moreover, she was a Visiting Professor of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo (2012), of Freie Universität Berlin (2014) - where she held the Chair Sérgio Buarque de Holanda in Brazilian Studies -, and of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee (2023). She was the representative of the departments of Sociology and Anthropology of the University of São Paulo at the Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico, Arqueológico, Artístico e Turístico do Estado de São Paulo [Council for the Defense of Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Touristic Heritage of the State of São Paulo - CONDEPHAAT] (2008-2009), and holds memberships of both the Brazilian Anthropological Association (ABA from 2005), the Brazilian Sociological Society (SBS - from 2006), and the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC from 2020). Her research focuses mainly on: urban theory; body, public space and urbanization; urban inequality/poverty; intersectionality and space;space and time in sociology; urban sustainability und public space; homelessness; urban mobility; cultural heritage; urban visual culture; sociology of everyday knowledge; the city of São Paulo (history); and social thought about the city in Brazil.

Fraya Frehse é professora associada em Sociologia da Cidade, do Espaço e da Vida Cotidiana na Universidade de São Paulo (USP) (https://sociologia.fflch.usp.br/frayafrehse), onde fez o bacharelado e a licenciatura em Ciências Sociais (Sociologia, Antropologia e Ciência Política); o mestrado e o doutorado em Antropologia Social, com doutorado-sanduíche na Universidade de Oxford, na École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales e na Freie Universität Berlin; e um pós-doutorado em Sociologia (da Cidade) nas universidades Livre e Humboldt de Berlim. Alumna da Fundação Alexander von Humboldt, bolsista do CNPq e life member do Clare Hall College da University of Cambridge, Fraya Frehse coordena na USP o Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas em Sociologia do Espaço e do Tempo (NEPSESTE) e o Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (GCSMUS) da Technische Universität Berlin (https://gcsmus.org/people/prof-dr-fraya-frehse/), além de ser integrante do Programa Cidades Globais do Instituto de Estudos Avançados (http://www.iea.usp.br/pesquisa/projetos-institucionais/usp-cidades-globais/integrantes/participantes). Foi visiting fellow da Freie Universität Berlin, da Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, da Université Paris Diderot, da Universität Wien, da Technische Universität Berlin e da University of Cambridge, além de visiting professor das universidades Nacional de Cuyo (2012), da Freie Universität Berlin (2014) - onde ocupou a posição de titular da Cátedra Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, de Estudos Brasileiros - e do Indian Technological Institute (IIT) Roorkee (2023). Tendo representado os departamentos de Sociologia e Antropologia da Universidade de São Paulo no Conselho de Defesa do Patrimônio Histórico, Arqueológico, Artístico e Turístico do Estado de São Paulo (CONDEPHAAT) (2008-2009), ela é sócia efetiva da Associação Brasileira de Antropologia (desde 2005), da Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia (desde 2006) e da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (desde 2020). Fraya Frehse tem experiência nas áreas de Sociologia e Antropologia em sua interface com a História, com ênfase em estudos urbanos, trabalhando principalmente sobre os seguintes temas: teoria urbana; corpo, espaço público e urbanização; desigualdade/pobreza urbana; interseccionalidade e espaço; espaço e tempo na Sociologia; sustentabilidade e espaço público; população em situação de rua; mobilidade urbana; patrimônio cultural; cultura urbana visual; sociologia do conhecimento de senso comum; cidade de São Paulo (história); pensamento social sobre a cidade no Brasil.
