Completei meu Doutorado em Ciências Biológicas (Biologia-Genética) pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP) em 1991. Trabalho na Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) desde 1989 e atualmente sou Professor Titular. Também sou Pesquisador Associado do National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute. Sou revisor de várias fundações e revistas científicas e Editor Assistente das Scientific Reports, Frontier in Genetics, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, Journal of Animal Diversity e Neotropical Ichthyology. Publiquei mais de 400 artigos em revistas especializadas, diversos capítulos de livros e um livro. Tenho participado de vários cursos de graduação na área de Biologia Celular e Molecular e em programas de pós-graduação nas áreas de Genética e Zoologia. Tenho trabalhado com peixes nos últimos 35 anos, realizando pesquisas em vários campos como: citogenética (cromossomos), genética de populações, sistemática, taxonomia, biogeografia, ecologia e biologia evolutiva. O foco principal da minha pesquisa é a biodiversidade de peixes na região Neotropical e, para isso, tenho trabalhado com muitos amigos em todo o mundo para investigar essa biodiversidade e principalmente estudar sobre sua origem e manutenção.
I completed my PhD in Biological Sciences (Biology-Genetics) at the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1991. I have worked at the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) since 1989 and I am currently a Full Professor. I am also an Associate Researcher at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institute. I am a reviewer of several foundations and scientific journals and Assistant Editor of Scientific Reports, Frontier in Genetics, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, Journal of Animal Diversity and Neotropical Ichthyology. I published more than 400 articles in specialized magazines, several book chapters and a book. I have participated in several undergraduate courses in the area of Cellular and Molecular Biology and in graduate programs in the areas of Genetics and Zoology. I have been working with fish for the past 35 years, conducting research in various fields such as: cytogenetics (chromosomes), population genetics, systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology and evolutionary biology. The main focus of my research is the biodiversity of fish in the Neotropical region and, for that, I have worked with many friends around the world to investigate this biodiversity and mainly to study about its origin and maintenance.
