EDUARDO HENRIQUE SILVA DE SOUSA

Dr Sousa earned his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the Universidade Federal do Ceará (2003), under supervision of Dr Ícaro de Sousa Moreira, where he developed novel metallocompounds as a strategy for tuberculosis therapy. During his PhD training, he also worked with Dr Nancy C Gerber at the San Francisco State University (2001 to 2004), where he investigated biophysics and biochemistry of metaloproteins, particularly the nitric oxide sensor, soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC). From 2004 to 2008, he spent time as a pos-doc researcher with Dr Marie-Alda Gilles-Gonzalez at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas focused on studying heme-based sensor proteins. In 2008, he was promoted to research scientist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he stayed until 2009. Since 2009, he joined the Departamento de Química Orgânica e Inorgânica of the Universidade Federal do Ceará, and is currently associate professor. He also spent time as visiting researcher at the University of Warwick (UK, 2013-2014) and Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portufal, 2019-2020). His reserach interests span in the broad tiopic of metals in biology with particular focus in the study of metalloproteins (heme-based sensors) and development of potential metallodrugs.

Dr Sousa recebeu seu título de doutorado em Química Inorgânica em 2003 pela Universidade Federal do Ceará, sob orientacao do Dr. Ícaro de Sousa Moreira, desenvolvendo novas estratégias de metalofármacos anti-tuberculose. Simultaneamente aos estudos de doutorado, obteve treinamento em bioquímica e biofísica de metaloproteínas na San Francisco State University - USA (2001-2004, profa Nancy Gerber), investigando, principalmente, a metaloproteína sensora de óxido nítrico guanilato ciclase solúvel (sGC). Posteriormente, realizou estágio de pós-doutoramento (2004-2008, profa Marie-Alda Gilles-Gonzalez) no Departamento de Bioquímica da University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas - USA. Em 2008 foi contratado como cientista (research scientist, UTSW - USA), investigando heme proteínas sensoras de oxigênio, permanecendo nesta Instituição até 2009 quando foi contratado pela Universidade Federal do Ceará. Posteriormente foi cientista visitante na University of Warwick (UK, 2013-2014, prof Peter Sadler) e Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal, 2019-2020, prof José Moura). Atualmente é membro da comissão interna de biossegurança da UFC. Dentre seus interesses científicos destacam-se a investigação de hemeproteínas sensoras, o desenvolvimento e estudo de reatividade de potenciais metalofármacos, com particular enfoque em agentes antituberculose, microbicidas, anticâncer e cardiovasculares. Tem experiência nas áreas de Química e Bioquímica, com ênfase em Química de Metalofármacos, Reatividade Química e Proteínas recombinantes. Tem atuado principalmente nos seguintes temas: desenvolvimento racional de metalodrogas - metalofármacos, hemeproteínas sensoras, sistemas de dois componentes, histidina quinases, ciclases e fosfodiesterases, cianoferratos, guanilato ciclase soluvel, "inorganic chemical biology".
