Joao Candido Portinari

Ingénieur Civil des Télécommunications from the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (1963), graduate in Mathématiques Spéciales from Lycée Louis-Le-Grand, Paris (1960), graduate in Mathématiques Supérieures from Lycée Louis-Le-Grand (1959), M.Sc. (1964) and Ph.D. (1966) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1966). After ten years abroad, returns to Brazil by invitation of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Prof. Portinari was one of the founders of the Mathematics Department of PUC-Rio and was Head of the Department in the period 1968-70.Since 1979, he has been the General-Director of the Portinari Project, which he conceived and set up. Among other actionsm the Portinari Project published, in 2004, after 25 years of research, the Catalogue Raisonné of the complete works of the Brazilian painter Candido Portinari (1903-1962). Prof. Portinari is also the President of the Candido Portinari Cultural Association and President of Portinari Licensing, a company that owns the trademark PORTINARI. He was granted the CLIO Prize of History, by the São Paulo Academy of History (2004) and the Sérgio Milliet Prize, awarded by the Brazilian Association of Art Critics (2005) and also, for Portinari Project's work,the prize Rodrigo Mello Franco de Andrade, awarded by the National Institute for the Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN - 2004) and the prize Jabuti (Brazilian Book Chamber - 2005). He was also awarded the title of Honorary Citizen São Carlos (SP), in 2007. In 2008 he was awarded the National Commend of Cultural Merit of Brazil and the Brazilian Union of Writers awarded him the Antonio Olinto Medal.In 2011 he won the Prize TRIP Transformers and in 2012 he was elected "The Year's Personality" by the Brazilian Associatiion of Art Critics. Graduação em Mathématiques Supérieures (1959) e Mathématiques Spéciales (1960) - Lycée Louis-Le-Grand - Paris. Após dez anos no exterior, retorna ao Brasil em 1966, a convite da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. Foi um dos fundadores do Depto. de Matemática da PUC-Rio, do qual foi Diretor no período 1968-70. Desde 1979, dirige o Projeto Portinari, que concebeu e implantou. Entre outras realizações, o Projeto Portinari publicou, em 2004, após 25 anos de pesquisas, o Catálogo Raisonné da Obra Completa de Candido Portinari. Atualmente é Diretor-Geral do Projeto Portinari, Presidente da Associação Cultural Candido Portinari e Presidente da Portinari Licenciamentos. Recebeu o Prêmio CLIO de História (Academia Paulistana da História - 2004) e o Prêmio Sérgio Milliet (Associação Brasileira dos Críticos de Arte - 2005), e também, em nome do Projeto Portinari, o Prêmio Rodrigo Mello Franco de Andrade (IPHAN - 2004) e o Prêmio Jabuti (Câmara Brasileira do Livro - 2005). Recebeu o título de Cidadão Honorário de São Carlos (SP), em 2007 e, no ano seguinte, o de Cidadão Honorário da Cidade de Brodowski (SP). Em 2008 o Ministério da Cultura outorgou-lhe a Ordem do Mérito Cultural, no grau de Comendador. Neste mesmo ano, foi agraciado pela Presidência da República com a Ordem do Mérito Marechal Cordeiro de Farias, na categoria de Comendador. Em 2010, foi-lhe outorgada pela Escola Superior de Guerra a Medalha da Ordem do Mérito Militar. Neste mesmo ano, o Ministério da Defesa o admitiu na Ordem do Mérito da Defesa, no Grau de Oficial do Quadro Suplementar, e a União Brasileira de Escritores outorgou-lhe a Medalha Antonio Olinto.
