Giorgio Ponzo

Giorgio Ponzo studied architecture at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (2009-11) and at the Technical University in Torino where he graduated cum laude in 1999.He worked with several offices in Italy and as independent architect establishing his own practice and focusing his work on the design of low energy buildings and several prize winning competition projects for public spaces and urban design both in Italy and internationally (honorable mention for Europan 7, 2003, in Riga, Latvia). From 2001 to 2009 he taught at the Architecture Faculty of the Technical University in Torino both as teaching assistant in different architecture and urban design studios and as interim professor in the Urban Landscape Design course (2008-09) and Computer Aided Design course (2003-04).In recent years he focused his activity as researcher and educator on the transformation of the workplace in the shift from industrial to creative economies. At the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam (NL) he conducted a research commissioned by Steelcase Inc. on how architecture can be seen as an augmentation device for the cognitive performance of its users by adopting specific physical features and material characteristics. The results of the research and the design studio were collected in two research reports "Knowledge Spaces, How Can Architecture Augment Creative Thinking" (2012) and "Knowledge Spaces, How Can We Envision Future Architecture of Knowledge Creation?" (2013).Parallel to that, in 2012-13, Giorgio was involved in another research project at the Berlage working on a urban design studio that investigated the border region between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. This research proposed different models for urban development also making use of parametric and computational techniques, manipulating building typologies and urban networks. The results of studio are gathered in the research report Siamese Metropolises, A Cartography of Relations Between Shenzhen and Hong Kong edited by the studio main tutors, Eduardo Rico (Arup London) and Enriqueta Llabres (Relational Urbanism).
