Graduated in Medicine from the Bahia School of Medicine and Public Health, Specialist in the form of residency in Pathological Anatomy, Master and Doctorate in Human Pathology from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Bahia. He did Postdoctoral studies at Case Western Reserve University and Harvard School of Public Health. He was a full professor for 38 years at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health. He is a Full Researcher at the Gonçalo Moniz Institute (IGM), a unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in Bahia, Full Professor at the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine (DPML), Faculty of Medicine, Federal University of Bahia, Adjunct Professor at Yale University the USA and Researcher category 1A of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development - CNPq. He is currently head of the Laboratory of Pathology and Molecular Biology (LPBM) at IGM, Head of DPML. He is a member of the Bahia Science Academy and the Bahia Medical Academy. He is an Honorary International Fellows member of ASTMH of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He is a member of the Scientific Technical Council of the Federation of Industries of Bahia (FIEB) and of the State Council of Science and Technology of the State of Bahia (CONCITEC) and is Regional-Bahia Secretary of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC). He was a Curator member of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Bahia (FAPESB), Coordinator of the Biotechnology Course, was director of IGM in 4 terms, President of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine and was Executive Coordinator of the Northeast Biotechnology Network (RENORBIO / MCTI). He conducts studies on clinical and molecular epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of parasitic infectious diseases oriented towards technological development and innovation with an emphasis on Arboviruses, Chagas, Schistosomiasis, Viral Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Bacterial Meningitis.

É Pesquisador Titular no Instituto Gonçalo Moniz (IGM), unidade da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ) na Bahia, Professor Titular do Departamento de Patologia e Medicina Legal (DPML) da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Federal da Bahia, Professor Adjunto da Universidade de Yale os EUA e Pesquisador categoria 1A do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico ? CNPq. Atualmente é chefe do Laboratório de Patologia e Biologia Molecular (LPBM) do IGM, Chefe do DPML. É membro da Academia de Ciência da Bahia e da Academia de Medicina da Bahia. É membro Honorary International Fellows of ASTMH da American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Faz parte do Conselho Técnico Científico da Federação das Indústrias da Bahia (FIEB) e do Conselho Estadual de Ciência e Tecnologia do Estado da Bahia (CONCITEC) e é Secretário Regional-Bahia da Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC). Foi membro Curador da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia (FAPESB), Coordenador do Curso de Biotecnologia, foi diretor do IGM em 4 mandatos, Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical e foi Coordenador Executivo da Rede Nordeste de Biotecnologia (RENORBIO/MCTI). Realiza estudos sobre epidemiologia clínica e molecular e de imunopatogenese das doenças infecciosas parasitárias orientados para o desenvolvimento tecnológico e inovação com ênfase em Arboviroses, Chagas, Esquistossomose, Hepatites Virais, Leptospirose e Meningites bacterianas.
