Maria Emilia Xavier Mendes

I am Professor in Software Engineering at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (Sweden). My research is interdisciplinary, encompassing three disciplines Software Engineering, Web Engineering, and Computer Science & Software/Web Engineering education. To date this research has led to 170+ refereed publications, including two books (one edited (2005 Web Engineering) and one authored (2007 Cost Estimation Techniques for Web Projects)). These publications are particularly focused in the areas of Software/Web measurement and metrics (e.g. resource estimation, quality, size metrics, productivity and usability), Evidence-based Software Engineering (e.g. systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses), and Software/Web engineering education (learning theories, collaborative learning). My work has received at least 2,400 citations , and obtained awards for best papers at several conferences. I have given keynotes at several events, have been a member in the program committee of 130+ International & regional conferences, and 40+ international & regional workshops, and have been awarded to date, as either Research Leader, or Collaborator, a total of GBP 2,220,814.79 in research grants. In relation to my teaching, I have an excellent teaching record, including undergraduate & postgraduate teaching, course development and co-ordination in Computer Science and Software/Web Engineering; supervised 30+ Postgraduate & Undergraduate projects, and 14 MSc. theses, with another three ongoing; main PhD advisor of four PhD theses (three completed and one on-going); co-supervised three DSc. theses (all completed). In addition, I have consulting experience in the areas of Web resource estimation (e.g. effort, risk), databases, Web usability, and object-oriented development, as well as running industry workshops in Web cost estimation and productivity benchmarking, and several tutorials and short courses on Web cost estimation, and software metrics & measurement. With regard to University administrative and service duties, I had a leading role in numerous service activities throughout my close to 14 years as a full time academic; I also played a significant role to the 4 disciplines related to my research with conference program committee and session chairing, refereeing in numerous areas, journal reviewing of 80+ papers, conference program committees of 170+ international conferences and workshops (including international Web and Empirical Software Engineering conferences), organising of workshops and conferences, lecturing of tutorials, participation in panels, and editorial board membership of several international journals: Empirical Software Engineering (2007 to 2011); Software Quality Journal; Journal of Software Measurement; International Journal of Software Engineering and Its Applications; Advances in Software Engineering Journal, Journal of Web Engineering, and International Journal of Web Engineering and Technology.
