Carlos de Austerlitz Andrade Lima Campos
Carlos de Austerlitz Andrade Lima Campos was born on June 20, 1949 in Bahia (Brazil), and educated in Recife where his family lived since 1959. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from the Catholic University of Pernambuco in 1973 Dr. Austerlitz started his professional career teaching mathematics and physics in the Colégio Estadual Joaquin Nabuco and Colégio Municipal of the of Pernambuco from 70 to 73. Also during the year of 73 he taught mathematics in the State of Pernambuco Nave School and did his medical internship in the Health Physics department of the Cancer Hospital of Recife. From June 74 to Sep. 86 he worked to the Brazilian Nuclear Company and from Sep. 86 to Aug. 97 for the IRD/CNEN. In 76, under the sponsorship of the CNEN and the Germany government, he attend six month of advanced training in metrology for ionizing radiation at the GSF, Munich. Also in 76 he participated in the International Trainning Course on Calibration Methods for Radiation Measuring Devices, held at the GSF. The training course was organized under the joint auspices of the International IAEA/WHO in co-operation with the government of the Federal Republic of Germany. After this course, he received two weeks of additional training in Dosimetry at the PTW, Germany. In Dec. 86, Dr Austerlitz finished the main projects: (i) the new facilities of the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory of the Institute of Radiation Protection, SSDL/IRD/CNEN, (2) the Standard Calibration Laboratory of Fortaleza, Ceará, (3) a thimble ionization chamber for measuring exposure in the range of low, medium and high energy, (4) a graphite transmission ionization chamber for controlling the output of x-ray machines, (6) assessment of the effective dose equivalent for workers of the IRD/CNEN, and (7) radioactive concrete sources at IRD/CNEN for calibration of uranium exploration and environmental field instruments. In 78 under the sponsorship of the CNEN and the French government, he attend one month highly advanced training in Dosimetry with primary standards at the BIPM, France. During the years of 79 and 80, he was awarded with a fellowship from the CNEN to pursue his M.Sc in Biology in the UERJ, Rio de Janeiro. In 84, sponsored by the Germany Government, he worked at the GSF for 3 month and received a Silver Medal for the worker he did from his boss, Dr. Gunter Drexler. In Jan. 87, he was awarded a scholarship by the CNPq to pursue graduate studies. He was admitted to the Health Physics Program of the GIT, USA. He received a M.Sc in Health Physics in Sep. 88. In Aug. 90 he completed the requirements for his PhD degree in Health Physics and Nuclear Engineering Program. During the period from Jan. to Dec. 92, he attended a Course on Strategic Policies ESG, Rio de Janeiro. In 93 he was the Head of the Radiology Laboratory of the IRD/CNEN. Between 96 and 03 Dr. Austerlitz acted as a deputy from the CRCN. CRCN is an institute of Brazil s CNEN, created in 96 in order to improve the Commission s regulatory and research activities in Brazil s North and North-east. By the time he left its directorship, the Centre s first phase, comprising the laboratories environmental analysis, radiation metrology, radiation dosimetry, radiological protection, nuclear medicine, radiology, radiation emergency training site and response, solid state dosimetry and a chemical laboratory for trace (ppb-ppm) and ultra-trace (ppq-ppb) elemental analysis, using ICPMS. He had a decisive role in the design of all laboratories, including equipment specification and testing, and also in the first of our personnel recruitment initiatives. In Nov. 05 he granted a scholarship from CNPq for 12 months to pursue Post-doctoral at the ECU, USA in the branch of PDT. He got retired from CNEN in Feb. 07.Since May 2007 Dr. Austerlitz Campos works as a Research Instructor in the EC.
graduate at Física from Universidade Católica de Pernambuco (1973), master's at General Biology from Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (1982), master's at Mestrado em Física Médica from Gergia Institute of Technology (1988) and ph.d. at Nuclear Engineering And Health Physics from Georgia Institute Of Technology (1990). Has experience in Nuclear Engineering, focusing on Instrumentation for Measure and Control of Radiation, acting on the following subjects: dosimetria, raios-x, calibração, metrologia and dosimetry.
