Graduado em História Natural pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1972), mestre em Biociências (Zoologia) pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1981) e doutor em Ciências Biológicas (Entomologia) pela Universidade Federal do Paraná (1992). Professor da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul - PUCRS - (aposentado em 2021) e da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS - (aposentado em 2003). Atualmente está disponível na identificação de cigarrinhas (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Cercopidae) das Américas. (E-mail: gcarvalho2010@gmail.com).
