Rafael Lopes Azize

I am associate professor of Philosophy at the Federal University of Bahia, where I was Head of the Graduate Progam in Philosophy from 2014 to 2017. In 2017-2018 I was an academic visitor at Swarthmore College and UFSC, working under Richard Eldridge and Celso Braida on problems of aesthetic experience and interpretation, mailnly in relation to Cavell and Witgenstein. I also lead the research group 'Aesthetics, Subjectivity, Culture, Education' (CNPq). My areas of interest are aesthetics and the philosophy of art and criticism, with an emphasis on the relations between art, subjectivity, culture and value; philosophy of language, with an emphasis on the relations between pragmatics, meaning, interpretation and rationality; critique of modernity; metaphilosophy. In my current research I examine a number of contemporary philosophical articulations of what I call uses of art in the life-world, between radical authonomism and reductive instrumentalism. Rafael Lopes Azize é licenciado em Letras (U. de Lisboa), mestre em Teoria Literária (UFSC) e doutor em Filosofia (Unicamp). É professor associado do Depto. de Filosofia e do PPG em Filosofia da UFBA, que coordenou de 2014 a 2017. Entre 2017 e 2018 realizou estágio pós-doutoral com Richard Eldridge no Swarthmore College (EUA), e com Celso Braida na UFSC, trabalhando sobre experiência estética, percepção e interpretação (Cavell, Wittgenstein, Eldridge). Na sua pesquisa atual, interpela articulações filosóficas contemporâneas sobre usos da arte no mundo da vida, entre os pólos tensos de um autonomismo radical e um instrumentalismo reducionista. Áreas de interesse: estética e filosofia da arte e da crítica, com ênfase nas relações entre arte, subjetividade, cultura e valor; filosofia da linguagem, com ênfase nas relações entre pragmática, experiência do significado, interpretação e racionalidade; crítica da modernidade; metafilosofia.
