Luiz Davidovich

He holds a degree in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1968) and a PhD in Physics from the University of Rochester (1976). He is currently a full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. His research is in the field of Physics, with emphasis on QUANTUM OPTICS and QUANTUM INFORMATION, working mainly on the following subjects: quantum entanglement, decoherence, devices for quantum computation, quantum state reconstruction, laser theory, quantum metrology. He is member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the European Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit in 2000, the TWAS Physics Award in 2001, the Álvaro Alberto Prize (CNpq) and the Tamandaré Medal (Navy of Brazil) in 2010, and the Commendation of the Order of Naval Merit in 2017. He is Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society. He was elected President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences for the periods 2016-2019 and 2019-2022, and Secretary-General of TWAS for the period 2019-2022.

Possui graduação em Fisica pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1968) e doutorado em Física pela University of Rochester (1976). Atualmente é professor titular da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Realiza pesquisas na área de Física, com ênfase em ÓPTICA QUÂNTICA e INFORMAÇÃO QUÂNTICA, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: emaranhamento quântico, descoerência, dispositivos para computação quântica, reconstrução de estados quânticos, teoria do laser, metrologia quântica. É membro da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, da Academia Mundial de Ciências (TWAS) e membro estrangeiro da National Academy of Sciences (USA), da Academia Chinesa de Ciências e da Academia Européia de Ciências. Foi agraciado com a Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico em 2000, com o Prêmio TWAS de Física em 2001, com o Prêmio Álvaro Alberto (CNpq) e a Medalha Tamandaré (Marinha do Brasil) em 2010 e com a Comenda da Ordem do Mérito Naval em 2017. É Fellow da Optical Society of America e da American Physical Society. Foi eleito Presidente da Academia Brasileira de Ciências para os períodos 2016-2019 e 2019-2022 e Secretário Geral da TWAS para o período 2019-2022.
