Dr. Roberto Pecoits-Filho (born 11/1968) is currently a Senior Research Scientist at arbor Research Collaborative for Health in Michigan, USA and a full professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná and director of the PhD and Masters Programs in Health Sciences at the same University. Dr. Pecoits-Filho received his M.D. degree in 1993, trained in Internal Medicine and Nephrology in Curitiba and completed his nephrology fellowship at the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1997-98. He received a Ph.D. from the University of São Paulo and thereafter went to Sweden as a visiting scholar at the Karolinska Institutet from 1999 to 2002 and a visiting professor at the Geroge Institute for Global Health in Australia (supported by a CAPES Scholarship). He is a Fellow of the American College of Phisicians (FACP) and of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN).
As a clinician, his activities are based at the Cajuru University Hospital, a Renal Sister Center with the Derby where he is the Chief of the Department of Internal Medicine. He is also Head of Nephrology at Marcelino Champagnat Hospital.
Dr. Pecoits was a principal investigator in 11 multicentric trials, leads 2 investigator driven multicentric trials in Brazil and is the Associate Editor of Nephron Clinical Practice and the Brazilian Journal of Nephrology. He sits in the editorial board of Peritoneal Dialysis International, Hemodialysis International, and Blood Purification and is a ad hoc reviewer for Journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JASN, and Kidney International. He has published his research in over 130 papers in international indexed journals, which were highly cited (Factor H of 25), and lectured in over 35 countries around the world.
He was appointed to be the Latin American member of the Young Nephrologists Committe of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), and recently became the Chair of this Committee, consisting of young nephrologists representing all regions of the world. He is also member of ISN?s Publication Committee, the Global Outreach (GO) Program for Latin America, the Research and Prevention Committee and the Edutation Embassador Program for ISN. He was a member of the KDIGO Controversies Meeting on Blood Pressure in ESRD, 2009 and an invited lecturer of the KDIGO Controversies Meeting on cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease, 2010.
He is the current Scientific Director of the Brazilain Society of Nephrology and also Vice President of the Latin American Society of Nephrology and Hypertensioncoordinator of the Latin American Chapter of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD). After being President of the Paraná State Society of Nephrology (2004-2005), Scientific Director of the Paraná Society of Nephrology of the Paraná Society of Nephrology (2006-2011) and Chair of the Dialysis Department of the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (2006-2008), a 50 year old society with almost 3,000 members.
His principal goals in the area of medical education involve dissemination of current knowlege and important techniques by mentoring (presential or at distance using internet-based communication tools) not only for the improvement in clinical application, but also for development of future professionals in order to promote sustainability of these national and international endeavors. In addition, collaborative research activities, such as the BRAZPD Study may serve as scientific training and shared publication opportunities. The education projects, which will be based on intense networking and collaboration, will need to be aligned with international and national funding agencies and societies.
Roberto Pecoits-Filho é Pesquisador Senio na Arbor Research Collaborative for Health em Michigan, EUA e professor titular da Escola de Medicina da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Parana. Formou-se em Medicina em 1993 e realizou treinamento como residente em Clínica Médica e Nefrologia, completando seu treinamento nefrológico na Universidade do Missouri em 1997-98. Recebeu o título de doutor em Nefrologia pela Faculdade de Medicina da USP e realizou um pós-doutorado no Instituto Karolinska na Suécia. No ano de 2017 foi Professor Visitante no George Institute for Global Health em Sidney, Australia (com o apoio de uma bolsa de estagio senior da CAPES).
Do ponto de vista de atividades acadêmicas e de gestão em pesquisa, coordenou a disciplina de Nefrologia entre 2005 a 2008, e o internato em Nefrologia entre 2014 e 2016, e foi diretor (2008 a 2016) do Programa de Pós Graduação em Ciências da Saúde. Também fez parte do comitê gestor do PIBIc institucional. Finalizou a orientação de 14 alunos de doutorado e 9 de metrado no Programa de Pós Graduação da PUCPR. Atualmente coordena a Área Estratégica de Saúde da PUCPR.
Quanto a lideranças associativas no passado, foi o Vice Presidente da Sociedade Latino Americana de Nefrologia e Hipertensão e Diretor Científico da Sociedade Brasileira de Nefrologia, além de Vice Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira e Presidente da Sociedade Paranaense de Nefrologia por duas oportunidades. Foi o presidente do comitê científico em dois Congressos Brasileiros de Nefrologia (2008 e 2014) e presidiu dois congressos do Capítulo Latino Americano da Sociedade Internacional de Diálise Peritoneal. É conselheiro da Sociedade Internacional de Nefrologia e membro do Comitê Executivo da Sociedade Internacional de Nefrologia (ISN), e do do KDIGO, uma instituição internacional especializada em elaboração de diretrizes clínicas. Também é membro do Comitê Executivo da SONG, uma iniciativa para a padronização de desfechos clínico em Nefrologia. Atualmente é Pesquisador (1A) do CNPq, e foi membro do Comitê Assessor (CA) da área de Medicina do CNPq entre 2013-2016.
É Editor Associado do Diabetology and Metabolic Syndrome, Jornal Brasileiro de Nefrologia e da Revista Nefrologia Latinoamericana. Também é membro efetivo do corpo editorial das revistas American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Peritoneal Dialysis International, Hemodialysis International and Blood Purification.
Em relação às atividades científicas, foi investigador principal em 15 estudos clínicos multicêntricos internacionais, e lidera 3 estudos clínicos brasileiros. É líder do comitê diretivo dos estudos BRAZPD e CKDOPPS. Durante sua carreira, publicou mais de 220 artigos em revistas internacionais indexadas. Do ponto de vista de métricas de produção, tem 10.408 citações no Google Scholar (5323 desde 2013), correspondendo a um índice H de 49 (36 desde 2013 com um i10 de 144). Foi palestrante em vários eventos científicos incluindo Congressos Nacionais e Mundiais em 43 países.
Foi o ganhador dos prêmios Maher Award (International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis ? pela sua contribuição cientifica na área de diálise peritoneal), Education Ambassador (International Society of Nephrology ? pelo seu trabalho em treinamento nefrológico em países da África) e Young Nephrology Education Award (Global Kidney Academy ? pela sua liderança global em iniciativas educacionais). No ano passado, recebeu o 29o Prêmio Paranaense de Ciência e Tecnologia (Governo do Estado do Paraná pela contribuição científica na Saúde do Estado).
