FLÁVIO PECHANSKY

Dr. Pechansky has an MD in Medicine by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) , Brazil. He was a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (93/94), received his MSc and PhD with honors at UFRGS, and is currently tenured Full Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry at UFRGS. He founded and for 25 year was the Director of the Center for Drug and Alcohol Research at UFRGS at Hospital de Clinicas of Porto Alegre (HCPA). He was Chief of the Addiction Psychiatry Servides at the same hospital for 8 years, and is currently the Coordinator of the Collaborating Center on Alcohol and Drugs of HCPA/SENAD, and Coordinator of the Professional Master Program in Prevention and Treatment of Drug and Alcohol Use of HCPA. He founded the Nucleus of Studies and Research on Alcohol and Traffic at UFRGS. Dr. Pechansky was Regional Assistant Editor for Addiction. He is a regular member of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) where he was Chair of the International Committee, and was a Board Member of the Committee on Alcohol, Transportation and Other Drugs of the Transportation Research Board, International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety. Former member of the Technical Advisory Group on Alcohol and Drug Epidemiology, World Health Organization, and of the expert group of professionals working with the World Health Organization in the areas of alcohol and cannabis. . He is also a member of the International Council on Alcohol Drugs and Traffic Safety,of which he is a Member-at-Large of the Executive Board, Brazilian Association for Drug and Alcohol Studies and the Psychiatric Society of Rio Grande do Sul. He is a consultant for the Brazilian Secretariat of Drug and Alcohol Policies, and was Chair of the International Committe at CPDD. He is a reviewer for Addiction, Drug and Alcohol Dependence, Traffic Injury Prevention, Social Sciences And Medicine, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, European Child and Adolescence Psychiatry, Braziilan Journal of Psychiatry, Cadernos de Saúde Pública, Psicologia e Sociedade, Psicologia. Reflexão e Crítica, Revista de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul. Dr. Pechansky was worked and published in the fields of Psychiatry, mostly about drug abuse, alcoholism, HIV/AIDS, adolescent drug consumption, and drugged driving. Among other awards, Dr. Pechansky been PI and Co-PI of NIDA, NIAID, SENAD, FAPERGS, The National Research Council (CNPq), and Bloomberg Philantropies projects, has received the Award of excellence in International Leadership, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Merit Diploma for Services from the Brazilian Secretariat of Drug and Alcohol Policies. Possui graduação em Medicina pela UFRGS, mestrado e doutorado em Medicina: Ciências Médicas pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Foi Hubert Humphrey Fellow da Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (93/94). É Professor Titular do Departamento de Psiquiatria da UFRGS, Fundou e foi Diretor por 25 anos do Centro de Pesquisa em Álcool e Drogas da UFRGS. Foi Chefe do Serviço de Psiquiatria de Adição do Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre ppor 8 anos. É Coordenador do Centro Colaborador em Álcool e Drogas HCPA/SENAD e Coordenador do Programa de Mestrado Profissional em Prevenção e Assistência a Usuários de Álcool e outras Drogas do HCPA. Criou o Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Trânsito e Álcool da UFRGS. É professor visitante das Universidades da Pennsylvania e Kentucky. Foi editor-assistente do periódico Addiction. Membro pleno do College on Problems of Drug Dependence, International Council On Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety, Associação Brasileira de Estudos do Álcool e Outras Drogas e Sociedade de Psiquiatria do Rio Grande do Sul. Foi Chair do comitê internacional do College on Problems on Drug Dependence - 2009/12. Membro do Technical Advisory Group on Alcohol and Drug Epidemiology da Organização Mundial da Saúde, e do grupo de experts da Organização Mundial da Saúde nas áreas de álcool e cannabis. Foi Membro do Comitê sobre álcool, outras drogas e transporte do Transportation Research Board do NIH e foi Member-at-Large do Comitê Executivo do International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety.
