Bernardo Boris Jorge Vargaftig

Possui graduação em Medicina pela Universidade de São Paulo (1963) e é Docteur-ès-Sciences - Université Paris-Sud (1972). Foi professor no Instituto Pasteur (Paris) de 1977 a 2002 e professor titular concursado de farmacologia do Instituto de Ciências Biomedicas da Universidade de São Paulo até 2007. Membro do Conselho de Direção do Instituto Pasteur de 1997 a 2000, responsável pelo desenvolvimento das descobertas internas.Tem experiência em alergia, inflamação e seus mediadores e trombose (plaquetas), e no terreno das peçonhas. Reivindica a descoberta do modo de ação dos anti-inflamatórios não esteróides como inibidores da síntese de prostanóides e a caracterização do Platelet-activating Factor (PAF) em seus efeitos broncopulmonares e plaquetários. Descreveu as propriedades do EFD (Extended-Freeze Dried, um derivado do BCG) como novo mecanismo anti-alérgico e anti-inflamatorio. Recebeu o Grand Prix Electricité-Santé da "Eléctricite de France" em 1993. Fundou e dirigiu as Institut Pasteur Euroconferences e as São Paulo Research Conferences (11 conferencias plenas). Presidente-fundador do GREMI (Groupe de Recherche sur les Médiateurs de l'Inflammation), clube francês de inflamação, é membro do Board do International Association of Inflammation Societies, presidiu o Congresso desta Associação em Natal (2013). Prossegue no ICB pesquisas sobre os mecanismos lesionais da isquemia reperfusão, com o Professor Wothan Tavares de Lima.Investiga atualmente (2015), com o Prof. Wothan Tavares de Lima (ICB-USP), os mecanismos lesionais pulmonares da isquemia e reperfusão intestinal.
