Fabio Kon

Fabio Kon is a Full Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of São Paulo (USP). He began his career working on Distributed File Systems, Computer Music, Automatic Configuration of Distributed Component Systems, and Reflective Middleware. Currently, his research interests include Smart Cities, Data Science, and Software Systems. Fabio is the author of over 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers and he is a member of the program committee of several international conferences. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the SpringerNature Journal of Internet Services and Applications for 10 years, the Director of the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and the Director of the USP FLOSS Competence Center. He is a special advisor to the Scientific Director of the São Paulo Research Agency (FAPESP) and a proposal evaluator for the European Commission Horizon 2020 Novel ideas for radically new technologies program. In 2014, he was a Visiting Professor at Technion, Israel, where he investigated innovation, entrepreneurship, and startups and, in 2018/2019, he was a Visiting Professor at MIT where he carried out research on Smart Cities.

Possui graduação em Ciência da Computação pela USP (1990) e em Música (Percussão) pela UNESP (1992). PhD em Ciência da Computação pela University Of Illinois At Urbana-Champaign (2000), atualmente, é Professor Titular da Universidade de São Paulo. Tem 30 anos de experiência em Desenvolvimento de Software e, atualmente, conduz pesquisas nas áreas de Sistemas de Software, Ciência de Dados e Cidades Inteligentes. Fabio é Distinguished Scientist da ACM e Editor-in-Chief Emeritus do SpringerNature Journal of Internet Services and Applications. Foi diretor internacional da Open Source Initiative (http://www.opensource.org) e Diretor do Centro de Competência em Software Livre (http://ccsl.ime.usp.br) do IME/USP. Foi Coordenador-Adjunto de Pesquisa para Inovação e hoje é Coordenador-Adjunto de Ciências Exatas e Engenharia da FAPESP e avaliador de propostas altamente inovadoras do programa Horizon 2020 da European Commission. Em 2014 foi Professor Visitante em Technion, Israel, onde pesquisou Inovação, Empreendedorismo e Ecossistemas de Startups e, em 2018/2019 foi Professor Visitante no MIT, onde desenvolveu pesquisas na área de Cidades inteligentes.
