Graduated in biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1977), Master in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1980) and PhD in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the Federal University of Rio de January (1983). Researcher 1A of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, Full Professor at the Fluminense Federal University (1994 ? 2012) and is presently Full Professor of the Federal University of Ceará since 2013. He was elected, in 2009, a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and since 2016 is part of his Advisory Board. In 2011 he received the Bunge Award, in the category life and work in the area of oceanography. In 2013, he was elected Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). In 2018, he received the degree of Commendator of the National Order of Scientific Merit. In 2019 was named Member of the Future Earth Coasts Academy (FEC Academy). He was a member for four (04) mandates of the Ecology & Limnology Advisory Committee (AC) and one (1) mandate in the AC Of Interdisciplinary Sciences, both of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He was a member of the advisory committees of the area of geosciences and the multidisciplinary area of the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). He is a member of the Scientific Council of the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems. He was a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the Land-Ocean Interaction in the Coastal Zone-International Geosphere Biosphere Program (LOICZ-IGBP: 2002-2015). He was a visiting researcher at the University of Hamburg between 1986 and 1991 and visiting Professor at the Université de Toulon et du Var, France, between 1998 and 2006. He coordinated the Millennium Institute of Materials Transfer at the Continent-Ocean Interface (2005-2008), and the National Institute of Science and Technology for the Continent-Ocean Materials Transfer (2008-2016). He was a member of the Steering Committee of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change. Scientific director (2015-2022) of the Foundation of Support for the Scientific and Technological Development of the State of Ceará (FUNCAP). Has experience in the field of ecology, with emphasis on biogeochemistry and environmental contamination, acting mainly on the following topics: coastal environments, environmental contamination, heavy metals, biogeochemistry of tropical ecosystems, monitoring environmental and ecosystem support capacity, impact of global climate change on ecosystem biogeochemistry.

Em 2011 recebeu o Prêmio Bunge, na categoria Vida e Obra na área de Oceanografia. Em 2013 foi eleito Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Em 2018, recebeu o grau de Comendador da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico. Em 2019 foi nomeado Member of the Future Earth Coasts Academy (FEC Academy). Foi membro em quatro (04) mandatos do Comitê Assessor CA-EL e um (1) mandato no CA-CIAM do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). Foi membro dos Comitês de Assessoramento da Área de Geociências e da Área Multidisciplinar da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES). É Membro do Conselho Científico da International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems. Foi membro do Comitê Diretor do Painel Brasileiro de Mudanças Climáticas e foi Coordenador da Sub-rede de Mudanças Climáticas e Oceanos da Rede Clima do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia entre 2012 e 2015. Foi membro do Comitê Científico do Programa IODP-CAPES e do Science Evaluation Pannel of the International Ocean Discovery Pannel (NSF) (2011-2016). Diretor Científico (2015-2022) da Fundação de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Estado do Ceará (FUNCAP). Possui experiência na área de Ecologia, com ênfase em Biogeoquímica e Contaminação Ambiental, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: ambientes costeiros, contaminação ambiental, metais pesados, biogeoquímica de ecossistemas tropicais, monitoramento ambiental e capacidade suporte de ecossistemas, impacto das mudanças climáticas globais na biogeoquímica de ecossistemas.
