My clinical practice is currently divided between the Operating Room and the Center for Pain Medicine at the MGH. In the Operating Room, I provide anesthesia care to a wide variety of surgical procedures, mostly related to the subspecialty of Thoracic Anesthesiology. In this area, I am involved with all types of adult thoracic surgery with a large number of high risk patients undergoing complex interventions such as pneumonectomy, esophagectomy, tracheal resection and reconstruction, laparoscopic Ivor-Lewis esophagectomy, video-assisted lobectomy, wedge resection, flexible and rigid bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, mediastinoscopy, endobronchial ultra-sonography, suspension microlaryngoscopy, and cricopharyngeal myotomy. Overall, I anesthetize 4 to 10 patients per week. I am qualified to and employ invasive methods of monitoring such as arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery catheter lines. I also perform continuous thoracic epidural anesthetics on a regular basis for intra- and post-operative pain management. Furthermore, I am certified by the National Board of Echocardiography on perioperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), which I use during my anesthetics as necessary. I have the responsibility of first to third call staff twice a month, coordinating the activities in the main operating room between 5 pm and 7 am in weekdays, and for 24 h during weekends. This emergency care relates to patients requiring surgery in the main operating rooms at the MGH during those hours, and not assigned to the specialized services. I have been a member of the Sub-Committee for Respiration of the AmericanSociety of Anesthesiologists since 2005. More recently, I started clinical activities as an Attending Physician at the Center for Pain Medicine at the MGH. In that Center, I provide predominantly outpatient care for adult patients with all types of chronic pain. I also perform and supervise residents and fellows in the performance of invasive procedures for Pain Management.
