Prof. Dr. Miguel Luiz Bucalem

Civil Engineer graduated by the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in 1984, Miguel Bucalem became Master In Engineering and started teaching at that institution in 1987. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - MIT, USA in 1992 and in 1997 became Full Professor of the Polytechnic School of the USP. He served as deputy head of the Department of Geotechnical and Structural Engineering at that university from 1998 to 2002, and as head of that department in 2006. Coordinated the graduate civil engineering programs up to Doctoral degree from 1994 to 1995. In 2007 and 2008 served as head of the Urban Planning Advisory Department of the Secretary of Planning of the City of São Paulo. In 2009 became Municipal Secretary of Urban Development, and completed the term in the end of 2012. Held the presidency of the Sao Paulo Urbanism, which is the municipal company dedicated to urbanism, from its creation in May 2010 to the end of 2012. In the period he served in the city administration he developed a comprehensive set of technical activities linked to urban development and management. Since 2013 upon the return to the activities at USP, has been developing activities in planning and management of cities, besides those in the area of structural engineering. Highlight for the coordination of the specialization course on planning and management of cities through the program of continuing education ? PECE of the School of Engineering of the University of São Paulo. Also for the participation between 2015 and 2016 as an invited specialist of the policy unit 7 ?Urban Economic Development Strategies? of the Habitat of the United Nations in the context of the preparatory process for the United Nations Conference on Housing and Urban Development which in 2016 defined the New Urban Agenda for the next 20 years. Member from 2014-2017 of the International Committee fot the Fourth Regional Plan of New York. Since 2017 acts as Scientific Coordinator of the Research Support Center of the University of São Paulo USP Cidades.

Graduou-se Engenheiro Civil pela Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo em 1984, obteve o título de Mestre em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade de São Paulo em 1987 e de Ph. D. em Engenharia de Estrutruras pelo Massachusetts Institute of Technology em 1992, e tornou-se Livre-Docente pela Escola Politécnica da USP em 1996. É Professor Titular da Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo desde 1997. Desempenhou várias funções administrativas na Universidade de São Paulo com destaque para Coordenação do Curso de Mestrado e Doutorado em Engenharia Civil da Escola Politécnica da USP (1994-1995) e para Chefia do Departamento de Engenharia de Estruturas e Geotécnica em 2006. Tem atuado como professor, pesquisador e consultor em Engenharia de Estruturas e em Modelagem Matemática e Computacional de Sólidos e Estruturas. De 2007 a 2012 esteve cedido a Prefeitura Municipal de São Paulo para exercer funções na administração municipal. De 2007 a 2008 como Chefe da Assessoria Técnica de Planejamento Urbano da Secretaria Municipal de Planejamento e de 2009 a 2012 como Secretario Municipal de Desenvolvimento Urbano. Ocupou a presidência da empresa municipal São Paulo Urbanismo desde sua criação em 2010 até o final de 2012. Nesse período em que atuou na administração municipal teve uma abrangente atuação técnica nas áreas de planejamento e desenvolvimento urbano e gestão de cidades. A partir de 2013 ao reassumir as atividades na USP, tem atuado em planejamento e gestão de cidades, além de na área de engenharia de estruturas. Destaque à Coordenação do curso de especialização em planejamento e gestão de cidades do PECE - Programa de Educação Continuada em Engenharia da Escola Politécnica da USP e à participação em 2015 e 2016 como especialista convidado da unidade de política 7 (Policy Unit 7) ?Urban Economic Development Strategies? do Habitat das Nações Unidas no âmbito do processo preparatório para a Conferência das Nações Unidas em Desenvolvimento Urbano e Habitação que definiu em 2016 a Nova Agenda Urbana para os próximos 20 anos. Integrou de 2014 a 2017 o Comitê Internacional para o Quarto Plano Regional de Nova Iorque que foi divulgado em 2017. Desde 2017 atua como Coordenador Científico do NAP-Núcleo de Apoio à Pesquisa da Universidade de São Paulo USP Cidades.
