Caroline Barreto de Lima

Carol Barreto is a black feminist woman, fashion designer from Salvador ? Bahia ? Brasil. Teacher of undergraduate and post‐graduate courses in Fashion Design and professor of the undergraduate Gender and Diversity Studies course of Federal University of Bahia, PhD student in the Multidisciplinary Graduate Program in Culture and Society - PosCultura ? UFBA. Her first runway show was in 2001. In 2007, she completed a master's degree in Design and Culture. Since then, she has worked as professor, designer and businesswoman. In 2010, her brand was re-structured for commercially purposes, like launching a website, opening the first atelier and store. At 2013 Carol Barreto was invited to represent Brazil in Dakar Fashion Week ‐ Senegal, an international event gathering fashion designers from different nationalities who express the cultural diversity of their country. In that visit to the African continent, she had the opportunity to gather multi‐ethnic references that are now announced in her collections. Until now, Carol Barreto has shown collections, on varios themes as gender, race, ethnicity and sexuality to discuss and promote black women culture in Brasil. The Carol Barreto brand has as its strongest features precise fittings, geometrical designs in color blocks, bold and futuristic imagery. It focuses in women who are young in soul, who are interested in costume that transmits their personal vision and personality. Carol Barreto's work, both academic and as fashion designer, promotes a feminist, anti-racist and queer discourse, the designer jugglesher academic activities, creative work and administration of the brand that carries her name and political ideas. With a feminist and anti‐racist discourse, the academic and practical work of this designer focuses on the creation of images aiming to a more conscious communication to be linked to fashion consumption.

Criadora do conceito de Modativismo, Carol Barreto, oriunda de Santo Amaro da Purificação - BA, é Mulher Negra, Cis, Nordestina, Candomblecista e Doutora em Cultura e Sociedade - Poscultura - IHAC - UFBA. Professora Adjunta do Departamento de Estudos de Gênero e Feminismo da Universidade Federal da Bahia, atua como Docente do campo dos Estudos de Gênero, Cultura e Linguagem, no Bacharelado em Estudos de Gênero e Diversidade, FFCH - UFBA. Pesquisadora do grupo Gênero, Arte e Cultura, atrelada ao Núcleo de Estudos Interdisciplinares sobre a Mulher (GAC-NEIM). Tem experiência na área dos estudos sobre Raça/Racismo, Gênero, Cultura e Arte. Por meio do projeto Modativismo, criou uma metodologia inovadora para formação artístico-político-metodológica no campo das artes, centrada na produção da intelectualidade mental e manual de mulheres negras, construindo assim, um trabalho de visibilidade internacional nas passarelas e galerias de arte em mais de 10 cidades fora do Brasil. Considerada uma das 100 mulheres mais importantes pela Vogue (2022), já foi homenageada com os prêmios: Fashion Futures - C&A (2022), Prêmio Amabília Almeida de Visibilidade Feminina (Salvador - BA), Prêmio Maria Felipa (Salvador - BA), MICSUL (Bogotá - Colômbia), Barra Mulher (Salvador - BA). Autora do livro documental "Coleção Colaborativa Modativismo: uma experiência de ensino aprendizagem em Moda Afrobrasileira" (2021), também é co-autora da obra Revolução da Moda: Jornadas para a Sustentabilidade (2021).
