Wilson Trajano Filho

My initial university training was in music and I obtained a B.A. in Music from the University of Brasilia in 1979. From the same institution I've got a master's degree in Anthropology in 1984. My doctoral training was done at the University of Pennsylvania where I presented a PhD dissertation in 1998. I teach at the Department of Anthropology, University of Brasilia, since 1993. Presently, I am also Associate Research Fellow at the Max-Planck Institutte for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale (Germany), co-editor of the Anuario Antropologico, and member of the editorial board of several journals in Brazil, USA, Portugal and Poland. I have done field research in Brazil (amongst professional musicians), Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.The Anthopology of Africa is my main area of interest, with emphasis on the following topics: history of portuguese colonialism in Africa, formation and reproduction of Creole societies in the Upper Guinea Coast region,:popular culture, and the analysis of rituals and symbolism in African societies.

Sou bacharel em Música pela Universidade de Brasília (1979), mestre em Antropologia pela Universidade de Brasília (1984) e doutor em Antropologia pela University of Pennsylvania (1998). Ensino no Departamento de Antropologia desde 1992 e atualmente sou investigador associado ao Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle/Saale (Alemanha). Fui co-editor do Anuário Antropológico e sou membro do corpo editorial de vários periódicos no Brasil e em outros países. Tenho feito pesquisa de campo no Brasil (entre músicos profissionais), na Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde e Sao Tomé e Príncipe. Minha principal área de interesse é a Antropologia da África, com ênfase nos seguintes temas: história do colonialismo português em África, formação e reprodução das sociedades crioulas na Alta Costa da Guiné, cultura popular e análise de rituais e formas narrativas em sociedades africanas.
