Prof. Dr. Alex Alves Bandeira is graduated in Civil Engineering (1994) from Federal University of Bahia ? UFBA, Master (1997) and Ph.D. (2001) in Engineering of Structures and Foundations from University of São Paulo. He is currently Adjunct Professor at the Department of Construction and Structures in Polytechnic School at UFBA. He has made part of his doctorate in Germany and Italy. In Germany he worked at the Institute of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the Hannover University. He developed researches in contact mechanics undergoing large 3D deformation with one of the most important researcher in this area (Peter Wriggers). In Italy, he worked at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Padua (Giorgio Zavarise and Bernhard A. Schrefler). He developed researches in micromechanical contact mechanics and wear. He studied the microscopically behavior at the contact interface by numerical procedures. In his PhD developed in Brazil, he worked with Paulo de Mattos Pimenta at the University of São Paulo. He worked also in Finite Elements Methods with contact mechanics with friction. He developed Post-Doc (2015-2016) in the Computational Materials Research Laboratory, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of California, Berkeley.
He made several consulting in structures engineering for companies in São Paulo.
He has been working a lot in computational mechanics and structural engineering. Dr. Bandeira has 18 years of professional experience in research and instruction, design and consulting. At UFBA, in short time, he created and structured the Master Degree of Structural Engineering, the only post-graduation in this area in the state. The Federal University of Bahia is a centenary institute and is the most important University in Northeast of Brazil. Now he is teaching in this course and working with MS degrees students. Before returns to his town, he has worked 15 years in São Paulo, capital, a biggest city of South of America. He teaching almost 10 years in Universities and worked as consultant in companies of structural calculation. He developed researches since 1995, in his master degree, doctorate and as research professor. Since 2009, he has been developed his researches in Federal University of Bahia.
Dr. Bandeira?s research expertise and projects include Computational Mechanics, Optimization, Non-Linear Analysis, Finite Elements Methods, Elasticity, Plasticity, Contact Mechanics, Impact problems, Non-Linear Dynamics, Reinforced Concrete, Concrete Structures Reinforced with Carbon Fiber, particle methods, fabric shields, advanced computer modeling and simulations, and numerical simulations technologies in structural pavements. He has developed and conducted short courses and workshops in Brazil. He has made over 30 presentations in several countries, like Austria, Brazil, China, England, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and USA.
He is a founder member of iSMARTi ? international Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport infrastructure (2005), and participates in the first iSMARTi international conference on sustainable transport infrastructure, sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Transportation Sciences, in Beijing, China in April 2008. He has been a member of the organizing committees of the 2005 International Symposium on Pavement Recycling, realized in São Paulo, Brazil. He also has been a chairman of the three editions of the International Conference of Recovery, Maintenance and Restoration of buildings, realized in São Paulo (2004) and Rio de Janeiro (2006 and 2010), all of them in Brazil. Since 2011 he is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture (USA), an Organizer Member of the Mini-Symposium of Computational Contact Mechanics of the 10th World Congress on Computational Mechanics and an International Scientific Committee Member of the 3th International Conference of Engineering Optimization
