Guilherme Suarez Kurtz
Guilherme Suarez Kurtz graduated from the Faculdade Nacional de Medicina of Universidade do Brasil (UB/UFRJ), where he initiated his research training under the supervision of Lauro Sollero, at the Department of Pharmacology. His connection with this department persisted for over 30 years, during which period he progressed to Full Professor. In 1994 he transferred his laboratory to the Department of Biochemistry at UFRJ, and in 1997 was appointed Head of Research of the Brazilian National Cancer Institute. He followed through all the steps of the investigator career of CNPq (Brazilian National Research Council), and is a Senior Investigator (Pesquisador 1A) since 1997.
He accomplished postdoctoral training at the Faculty of Medicine (Paris), University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University and University College, London, and was Visiting Professor/Scientist at Columbia University, Merck Research Laboratories, Université de Paris-Sud and Université de Lille.
Guilherme Suarez Kurtz has published ca. 200 indexed original papers and reviews, was Editor of the book Pharmacogenomics in Admixed Populations published by Landes Bioscience, and is currently Associate Editor of The Pharmacogenomics Journal - Nature, and member of the Editorial Boards of British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Frontiers in Pharmacology and Pharmacogenomics, He pioneered research in Clinical Pharmacokinetics and in Pharmacogenomics in Brazil, and in 2004 promoted the creation of the Brazilian Pharmacogenetics Network, which presently congregates 18 research groups from all geographical regions of Brazil. He has supervised over thirty Master and Doctorate dissertations, many undergraduate students and published six educational videos in pharmacology. In 1994, he created and became the first Coordinator of "Programa Aristides Pacheco Leão", sponsored by Academia Brasileira de Ciências, that provides scholarships for undergraduates to carry on research projects in the laboratories of Academics, during the university vacation months.
Guilherme Suarez Kurtz was Vice-President of the Brazilian Society of Pharmacology (SBFTE), Member of the Selection Committee of the Academia Brasileira de Ciências, Member of several committees of CNPq and the Ministry of Health, and the first Brazilian representative in the Scientific Committee of the International Agency for Cancer Research (WHO/IARC). He chaired the Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics Section of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) in the 2014-2018 term, IUPHAR Councillor for the 2018-2022 term.and is currently Member of the Ececutive Committee.
Médico, Livre-Docente e Professor Titular de Farmacologia, UFRJ, com estágios de pós-doutorado na Faculdade de Medicina de Paris - da qual é Assistente Estrangeiro - Universidade da Pensilvânia, Columbia University de Nova York e University College de Londres. È Pesquisador 1A do CNPq e Membro Titular da Academia Brasileira de Ciências. Foi Coordenador de Pesquisa (1997-2004) e é atualmente Pesquisador do Instituto Nacional de Câncer. Pioneiro, em nosso país, na pesquisa em farmacocinética clínica e farmacogenética, foi o criador e é o atual Coordenador da Rede Nacional de Farmacogenética (Refargen). Publicou cerca de 200 artigos completos e revisões em revistas indexadas, orientou mais de trinta teses de mestrado e doutorado, dezenas de estudantes de iniciação científica, além de ter criado seis vídeos educativos em farmacologia. É Editor do livro Pharmacogenomics in Admixed Populations, publicado pela Landes Biosciences, Editor Associado do The Pharmacogenomics Journal - Nature, e Membro do Corpo Editorial dos periódicos British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Frontiers in Pharmacology e Pharmacogenomics. Na Academia Brasileira de Ciências, foi Membro da Comissão de Seleção de acadêmicos, criou e é o atual Coordenador do Programa Aristides Leão de estímulo a vocações científicas. Foi Vice-Presidente da SBFTE, integrou o Comitê Assessor BF do CNPq, o Comitê de Assessoria Internacional da CAPES e várias comissões do Ministério da Saúde na área de medicamentos. Representou o Brasil no Comitê Científico da Agência Internacional para Pesquisa em Câncer (IARC) da OMS (2000-2002), integrou a Comissão Organizadora do First Latin American Pharmacogenomics Congress (2010) e presidiu a 2a. edição deste congresso no Rio de Janeiro (2012). Foi Presidente (Chair) da Seção de Farmacogenética da International Union of Pharmacology (IUPHAR) entre 2014-18, Conselheiro (Councillor) no quadriênio 2018-22 e atualmente é Membro Do Comitê Executivo.
