Graduated in Biological Sciences (1988) and PhD in Botany (1993), both from the University of São Paulo. Visiting researcher at the Institute for Marine Biosciences (NRC-Canada, 1991-92). Professor at the University of São Paulo since 1994, Full Professor since 2015 and head of the Department of Botany (2014-16). Coordinator of the CNPq Botany Advisory Committee (2015-18). Member of the Coordination Committee of the Biota-FAPESP Program (2009-18), and of Biological Sciences I of FAPESP (2018 - in progress). Participated in the Genome Project Xylella fastidiosa and other projects of the ONSA-FAPESP Network that generated several publications, including two articles in the journal Nature. Received several awards, including the Provasoli Award for best publication in the Journal of Phycology. Participated in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Phycology (2009-11) and as an associate editor of Phycologia (2011-17). Vice President International of the Phycological Society of America (2015-16). Currently is an associate editor of the Journal of Phycology and an Overseas Vice-President for the British Phycological Society. Member of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. Has experience in the field of molecular biology and genomics, acting mainly on the following themes: biodiversity and molecular phylogeny of algae, genomics of algae and bacteria, and studies on red algae (Rhodophyta). Mother of 2 children born in 2001 and 2003.
