BS in Agronomy from Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV, 1988), M.Sc. in Plant Pathology from UFV (1991) and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of California, Davis (1996). Works in the field of plant pathology, with emphasis on plant virology and genetics of host-pathogen interactions. The main line of research is the ecology and evolution of begomoviruses (plant viruses with an ssDNA genome), including the discovery and characterization of new viruses in non-cultivated plants and the study of factors that affect virus transfer from non-cultivated to cultivated plants. Was Editor-in-Chief of Tropical Plant Pathology (2012 to 2017) and Associate Editor of Archives of Virology, Annals of Applied Biology, Journal of General Virology, Plant Pathology, and Virology. Current President of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) (2020-2023).
Eng. Agrônomo (1988) e Mestre (1991) em Fitopatologia pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), Ph.D. em Fitopatologia pela Universidade da California, Davis (1996). Professor Titular no Dep. de Fitopatologia da UFV. Atua na área de fitopatologia, com ênfase em virologia vegetal e genética da interação patógeno-hospedeiro. A principal linha de pesquisa é a ecologia e evolução de begomovírus (vírus de plantas com genoma de ssDNA), incluindo a descoberta e a caracterização de novos vírus em plantas não-cultivadas e o estudo dos fatores que afetam a transferência de vírus de plantas não-cultivadas para plantas cultivadas. Além das atividades de pesquisa, atua no ensino de graduação e pós-graduação e presta serviços de diagnose de viroses vegetais por meio da Clínica de Doenças de Plantas do Dep. de Fitopatologia da UFV. Foi editor-chefe do periódico Tropical Plant Pathology (2012 a 2017) e editor-associado dos periódicos Archives of Virology, Annals of Applied Biology, Journal of General Virology, Plant Pathology e Virology. Atualmente é Presidente do International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) (2020-2023).
