Marcello Luiz Rodrigues de Campos

Marcello Campos nasceu em Niterói, RJ, em 1968. Graduou-se Engenheiro Elétrico com ênfase em Eletrônica "cum laude" pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) em 1990, M.Sc. em Engenharia Elétrica pela COPPE/UFRJ em 1991, e Ph.D. em Engenharia Elétrica pela University of Victoria, Victoria, Canadá, em 1995. Foi bolsista recém-doutor do Programa de Engenharia Elétrica da COPPE/UFRJ e do Departamento de Eletrônica da Escola de Engenharia/UFRJ em 1996. De janeiro de 1997 a maio de 1998 foi Professor Adjunto do Departamento de Engenharia Elétrica do Instituto Militar de Engenharia, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Atualmente é Vice-Diretor Geral da COPPE e Professor Titular do Programa de Engenharia Elétrica (PEE) da COPPE/UFRJ, onde foi Diretor Adjunto para Assuntos Acadêmicos entre 2019 e 2023, e Vice-Coordenador e Coordenador do PEE nos anos 2004 e 2005, respectivamente. Entre os meses de setembro e dezembro de 1998 foi pesquisador visitante do Laboratory for Telecommunications Technology, Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finlândia. Em 2001 recebeu o prêmio Nokia Visiting Fellowship para visitar o Centre for Wireless Communications, CWC, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finlândia. No biênio 2000-2001 serviu como Diretor para a América Latina da Sociedade de Comunicações/IEEE. Em 2008, visitou o grupo do Prof. Are Hjorungnes no UNIK, University Graduate Center, University of Oslo, Noruega, como parte de um projeto de cooperação internacional Brasil-Noruega. Em 2011 ajudou a criar e foi o coordenador até 2017 do Capítulo da Sociedade de Processamento de Sinais do IEEE no Rio de Janeiro. Foi membro do Conselho da SBrT por dois mandatos consecutivos, entre 2014 e 2018, e Vice-Presidente de Finanças entre 2018 e 2020. Em 2018 esteve na Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Noruega, participando do projeto de micro-sabático do Departamento de Sistemas Eletrônicos. Tem atuado em pesquisa e consultoria nas áreas de teoria da estimação, processamento de sinais, algoritmos adaptativos, beamforming, comunicações móveis e acústicas submarinas, otimização e big data. Desde 2001 já lecionou mais de 150 cursos em sistemas de comunicações móveis GSM, 3GSM e LTE em 15 países. É membro Sênior do Instituto de Engenheiros Elétricos e Eletrônicos (IEEE) e da Sociedade Brasileira de Telecomunicações (SBrT) e membro da Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM).(22/09/2006)

Marcello L. R. de Campos was born in Niteroi, Brazil, in 1968. He received the Engineering degree (cum laude) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1990, the M.Sc. degree from COPPE/UFRJ in 1991, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada, in 1995, all in Electrical Engineering. In 1996, he was post-doctoral fellow with the Department of Electronics, School of Engineering, UFRJ, and with the Program of Electrical Engineering, COPPE/UFRJ. From January 1997 until May 1998, he was Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering (DE/3), Military Institute of Engineering (IME), Rio de Janeiro. He is currently Vice-Director of COPPE and Professor of the Program of Electrical Engineering (PEE), where he has also served as Deputy Director for Academic Affairs from 2019 to 2023, and Department Vice-Chair and Chair (PEE) in the years 2004 and 2005, respectively. As visiting scholar, he has spent small sabatical periods at the Laboratory for Telecommunications Technology, Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland, at the Centre for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland, at the University Graduate Center of the University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway, at Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland, and at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. Prof. Campos served as IEEE Communications Society Regional Director for Latin America in 2000 and 2001, Local-Arrangements Co-Chair for GLOBECOM'99, Finance Chair for SPAWC 2008, Plenary Chair for ISCAS 2011, and Technical Co-Chair for the 2013 Brazilian Telecommunications Symposium. He founded and was the Chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Rio de Janeiro Chapter for four years. He was member of the Council of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society for two consecutive terms, between 2014 and 2018, and Vice-President of Finances between 2018 and 2020. He has taught over 150 courses on mobile communications in 15 countries, and managed numerous RD projects in signal processing and communications for technology companies in Brazil and abroad. His research interests include adaptive signal processing in general and its application to distributed networks in particular, adaptive beamforming, statistical signal processing, statistical and machine learning, optimization, signal processing for communications, underwater, mobile and wireless communications, and MIMO systems. He is associated with the Signals, Multimedia, and Signal Processing Laboratory (www.smt.ufrj.br) at COPPE/UFRJ.
