Luiz Alfredo Vidal de Carvalho

Full Professor at the the School of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)and Program of Systems Engineering and Computer Science of COPPE-UFRJ, retired in 2020 after 36 years researching and teaching Artificial Intelligence, Datamining, Virtual Reality, Neurophysiology, Biophysics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Also retired in 2020 as a level 1 Researcher at CNPQ from 1992 to 2019. Teaches in the undergraduate courses of Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Biophysics, Biomedicine, Phonoaudiology and Physiotherapy, Also teaches at the M.Sc., and Ph.D. levels at COPPE and School of Medicine Programs.. Half of his career was developed at the Systems Engineering course and also in the Automation Engineering course (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) at COPPE-UFRJ. Graduated in Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1982), Master in Engineering (Non-linear Optimization) from COPPE, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1984), and Ph.D. in Systems Engineering and Computer Science from COPPE, (1989), in computational modelling of neurophysiological phenomena. Since his doctorate in 1989, he has always directed himself to interdisciplinary research, bringing together Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Neurosciences, Biostatistics, Radiotherapy, and Dataminig. Indeed, he is the pioneer in Brazil in the fields of datamining and virtual reality. He coordinated dozens of research projects funded by CNPQ and FAPERJ (Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation) always with teams of interdisciplinary nature. He is also the co-founder of the undergraduate course of B.Sc. in Biophysics at his university in 2010, founder of the Program of M.Sc. and D.Sc. of History of Science and Epistemology in 2008, and also co-founder of the M.Sc. and D.Sc. Program of Bioethics and Collective Health in 2012. After thirty six years working at UFRJ and at the age of 60 years old, he retired. Finally, it is worth noting that during 16 of this 36 years at UFRJ, he has been the chairman of the M.Sc. and Ph.D. above mentioned Programs, in different periods of time, of course. He has Portuguese and Brazilian citizenship. He is married with a History teacher and has a daughter (26 y.o., paediatrician) and a son (33 y.o. lawyer).
