Dr. Carlos Alberto Eiras Garcia

Carlos A. E. Garcia earned a bachelor's degree in Physics from the State University of Campinas in 1977, and a master's and doctoral degree in Oceanography from the University of Southampton in 1986 and 1989, respectively. Postdoctoral fellow at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in 2003-2004 at the Maryland University System. He is Full Professor (retired) of Physical Oceanography at the Institute of Oceanography of the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG). Throughout his academic career at the Federal University of Rio Grande (between 1979 and 2015), he held the administrative functions of Head of the Department of Physics (1982-1984), Head of the Research Division (1990-1991), Head of the Department of Physics (1993-1996), Dean of the Federal University of Rio Grande (1997-2000) and Director of the FURG Institute of Oceanography (2009-2013). In 1996, he led the project to create the PPG in Physical, Chemical and Geological Oceanography (currently CAPES 6). He coordinated the High Latitude Oceanography Group from 2003 to 2012. He was a member of the National Committee for Antarctic Research (CONAPA / MCTI) and the National Committee for Marine Science (CCM / MCTI). He was a member of the SeaWiFS Science Team, the POLDER Science Team at NASDA and the Ocean Color Team at NASA in the area of satellite oceanography. He participated in several scientific expeditions in the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic, as a researcher and on-board scientific coordinator, between 1995 and 2010. He coordinated the actions of the Coastal Zones sub-network of REDE CLIMA and of the Climate Change INCT between 2008 and 2014. Alternate member of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change. He is currently a Volunteer Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) and at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), where he teaches and advises students from the PPGs in Physical Oceanography, Chemistry and Geology at FURG and Oceanography at UFSC. He is the national coordinator of the Brazilian Coastal Monitoring System (SiMCosta) and the National Oceanic Observation and Monitoring Network (ReNOMO). Periodically he reviews projects submitted to national and international agencies, as well as reviews scientific articles in the field of oceanography and remote sensing of the oceans.

Carlos A. E. Garcia obteve o bacharelado em Física pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas em 1977, os títulos de mestre e doutor em Oceanografia pela University of Southampton, em 1986 e 1989, respectivamente. É Professor Titular (aposentado) de Oceanografia Física do Instituto de Oceanografia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). Ao longo de sua carreira acadêmica na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (entre 1979 e 2015), desempenhou as funções administrativas de Chefe do Departamento de Física (1982-1984), Chefe da Divisão de Pesquisa (1990-1991), Chefe do Departamento de Física (1993-1996), Reitor da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (1997-2000) e Diretor do Instituto de Oceanografia da FURG (2009-2013). Em 1996, liderou o projeto de criação do PPG em Oceanografia Física, Química e Geológica (atualmente, CAPES 6). Coordenou o Grupo de Oceanografia de Altas Latitudes de 2003 a 2012. Foi membro do Comitê Nacional de Pesquisas Antárticas (CONAPA/MCTI) e do do Comitê Nacional de Ciências do Mar (CCM/MCTI). Foi membro do SeaWiFS Science Team, do POLDER Science Team da NASDA e do Ocean Colour Team da NASA na área de oceanografia por satélites. Participou de várias expedições científicas no Oceano Austral e Atlântico Sul, como pesquisador e coordenador científico embarcado, entre 1995 e 2010. Coordenou as ações da sub-rede Zonas Costeiras da REDE CLIMA e do INCT de Mudanças Climáticas entre 2008 e 2014. Membro suplente do Conselho Diretor do Painel Brasileiro de Mudanças Climáticas. Atualmente é Professor Voluntário da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG) e da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC), onde ministra aulas e orienta estudantes dos PPGs de Oceanografia Física, Química e Geológica da FURG e de Oceanografia da UFSC. É coordenador nacional do Sistema de Monitoramento da Costa Brasileira (SiMCosta) e da Rede Nacional de Observação e Monitoramento Ocênico (ReNOMO). É membro do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Oceânicas (INPO). Revisa periodicamente projetos submetidos a agências nacionais e internacionais, assim como revisa artigos científicos submetidos a jornais nacionais e internacionais na área de oceanografia e sensoriamento remoto dos oceanos.
