Formado em Geologia em 1977 pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, doutorado (Ph.D.) em Micropaleontologia & Estratigrafia Aplicada pela University of Plymouth, Reino Unido (1990), pós-doutorado pela Fundação Alexander von Humboldt - University of Heidelberg, Alemanha (1993-1994), Habilitação (Dr. habil.) e a Venia Legendi em Geologia & Paleontologia pela Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (1997). Entre 1995 e 2001 coordenou o Projeto No. 381 (South Atlantic Mesozoic Correlations) do Programa Internacional de Correlação Geológica (IUGS/UNESCO). Entre 1992 a 2004 foi Professor Colaborador no Curso de Pós-Graduação em Geociências da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Chefiou o Setor de Bioestratigrafia e Paleoecologia do Centro e Pesquisas da PETROBRAS (CENPES), entre 1994 e 2000. Trabalhou como geólogo sênior/consultor da Petróleo Brasileiro S/A (Petrobras), entre Janeiro de 1978 a Junho de 2011. Cientista Embaixador ("Vertrauenswissenschaftler") para o Brasil da Fundação Alexander von Humboldt (Março 2008 -Março 2014). Atualmente é Editor Chefe do periódico Cretaceous Research (Elsevier, Amsterdam) (Julho 2012 -); Privat-Dozent (Livre Docente)/ Associate Professor do Institut für Geowissenschaften, Universität Heidelberg (Ruprecht-Karls); Diretor da Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research (Outubro 1996 -), Vice-Presidente (1999 e 2013), Presidente (2000 e 2014); Diretor do "The Micropaleontology Project, Inc." (MicroPress/ NY; Fevereiro 2008 -October 2014). Tem como principal linha de pesquisa a Paleontologia Estratigráfica, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: estudos estratigráficos de alta resolução, filogenia, paleoecologia e paleoceanografia de foraminíferos do Cretáceo e do limite Cretáceo-Paleógeno; dinâmica de ecossistemas, padrões de extinção e coevolução; foraminíferos do Quaternário, ecologia e paleoclimatologia.
