Paula Cals Brügger Neves

Full Professor at the Department of Ecology and Zoology at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) until February 2019, and currently coordinator of the Ecological Justice Observatory (OJE/UFSC). She holds a degree in Biological Sciences, a specialization in Hydroecology, a Master's in Education (Education and Science) and a PhD in Human Sciences - Environment and Society. Taught the disciplines Biosphere, Sustainability and Industrial Processes; Conservation of Natural Resources; Environment and Development; Education, Environment and Sustainability (Undergraduate level); Ecological, Economic and Ethical Dimensions of Sustainability (Professional Master's Degree in Environmental Criminal Forensics); and Sustainability Management in the Knowledge Society (Postgraduate Program in Engineering and Knowledge Management - Master's and Doctorate levels) at UFSC. She is the author of the books Educação ou Adestramento Ambiental? (Environmental Education or Environmental Drilling?), with three editions; Amigo Animal - interdisciplinary reflections on education and the environment: animals, ethics, diet, health, paradigms; and Speciesist Journalism - Texts and fragments of perspectives on non-human animals in the media (only available in Portuguese). He coordinated for fifteen years (2000-2015) the animalistic environmental education project Amigo Animal, offered as a cross-cutting theme for schools in the municipal (Florianópolis) and state networks of Santa Catarina state. The project was a pioneer in approaching the animal issue from a One Health perspective, by showing how animal, human, and environmental health are inextricably intertwined. She works on the following themes: animal abolitionist environmental education; interdisciplinarity, science and sustainability paradigms; and the relationship between human beings and other animals as a society-nature relationship. Since 1999, he has been studying the image of nature and non-human animals in the media and, since 2003, researching the ethical and epistemological implications of the mechanistic view, dominant in western science, on vivisection. Another permanent object of study is the interrelation of the ecological, ethical, social and economic dimensions of sustainability in productive processes such as livestock. Since 1993, she has been working on the concepts of generative theme (Paulo Freire) and hidden curriculum (Michael Apple) in the field of environmental education. She was coordinator of the Department of Environment of the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB) between 2005 and 2007, and director of Education at the Animal Abolitionist Institute (IAA) between 2006 and 2008. She was co-founder and columnist for the Animal Rights News Agency (ANDA).

Atualmente é coordenadora do Observatório de Justiça Ecológica (OJE/UFSC). É autora dos livros Educação ou Adestramento Ambiental?, com três edições; Amigo Animal - reflexões interdisciplinares sobre educação e meio ambiente: animais, ética, dieta, saúde, paradigmas; e Jornalismo Especista - Textos e fragmentos de olhares sobre os animais não humanos na mídia. Coordenou por quinze anos (2000-2015) o projeto de educação ambiental animalista Amigo Animal, oferecido como tema transversal para as escolas das redes municipal (Florianópolis) e estadual de Santa Catarina. O projeto foi pioneiro ao abordar a questão animal numa perspectiva de Saúde Única, ao mostrar como a saúde animal, humana, e ambiental estão inextricavelmente interligadas. Atua nas seguintes temáticas: educação ambiental abolicionista animal; interdisciplinaridade, paradigmas de ciência e sustentabilidade; e relação dos seres humanos com os outros animais como relação sociedade-natureza. Vem, desde 1999, estudando a imagem da natureza e dos animais não-humanos na mídia e, desde 2003, pesquisando as implicações éticas e epistemológicas da visão mecanicista, dominante na ciência ocidental, na vivissecção. Outro objeto permanente de estudo é a inter-relação das dimensões ecológicas, éticas, sociais e econômicas da sustentabilidade em processos produtivos como a pecuária. Vem desde 1993 trabalhando os conceitos de tema gerador (Paulo Freire) e currículo oculto (Michael Apple) no âmbito da educação ambiental. Foi coordenadora do Departamento de Meio Ambiente da Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (SVB) entre 2005 e 2007, e diretora de Educação do Instituto Abolicionista Animal (IAA) entre 2006 e 2008. Foi co-fundadora e colunista da Agência de Notícias de Direitos Animais (ANDA).
