Gabriel Nogueira Duarte

Gabriel Duarte is Project Director of Urbanism at Bernardes Architecture, based in Rio de Janeiro, and a Professor at the Department of Architecture and Urbanism of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (DAU PUC-Rio), where he runs design studios that investigate the intermediate scales between landscape and architecture. He was one of the Founding Partners at CAMPO, a design and planning practice that operated from Rio de Janeiro from 2007 to 2016 that specialized in participatory strategies. With projects in Brazil and Africa, CAMPO completed numerous urban regeneration and social housing projects. He co-created the New Cartographies group, which researches new methods for collaborative mapping, and the Laboratory for Architecture, Infrastructure and Territory (LAIT) within the Graduate Program in Architecture at PUC-Rio (PPGA PUC-Rio). He has lectured extensively in both Brazil and abroad, having been a Visiting Professor at London?s Architectural Association School of Architecture, at MIT and the Harvard School of Design, in Cambridge, at the Marseille School of Architecture, France, among others. He has received different international awards, such as: the Wolf Tochtermann Prize, from UNESCO; and the Takashi Inuye Award, from the International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP). Since 2007, he has been a Member of the Pool of Reviewers of the European Science Foundation (ESF), and in 2014 was appointed Member of the Steering Committee of the UN-Habitat Research Hub in Informal Urbanism, led by the Institute for Landscape Architecture of Leibniz University Hannover (ILA Hannover), Germany. In 2014-15, he was the Lemann Visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies of Harvard University (DRCLAS). He was educated as an architect and urban designer at the School of Architecture of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (BArch) Brazil, and at the Delft University of Technology (MSc cum laude), Netherlands.

Gabriel Duarte é sócio-fundador do escritório CAMPO arquitetura e urbanismo, localizado no Rio de Janeiro e é Professor do Curso de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da PUC-Rio (CAU PUC-Rio), onde ensina em ateliers de projeto que investigam as escalas intermediárias entre o território e a arquitetura. Recentemente ajudou a criar o grupo Novas Cartografias, que pesquisa novos métodos de mapeamento colaborativo, e o Laboratório de Arquitetura, Infraestrutura e Território (LAIT), vinculado ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Arquitetura da PUC-Rio (PPGArq PUC-Rio). Tendo dado palestras e aulas extensivamente tanto no Brasil quanto no exterior, foi recentemente Professor Visitante na Architectural Association (Londres) e no MIT e Harvard (Cambridge), entre outras. Entre os diversos prêmios que recebeu destacam-se o prêmio Wolf Tochtermann Prize, da UNESCO, e o prêmio Takashi Inuye Award, da Federação Internacional para Habitação e Planejamento (IFHP). Desde 2007 é Membro do Quadro de Avaliadores da Fundação Europeia de Ciência (ESF) e em 2014 foi convidado a integrar o Comitê Gestor do Núcleo de Pesquisa em Urbanismo Informal do UN-Habitat, sediado no Instituto de Paisagismo da Universidade Leibniz de Hannover (ILA Uni-Hannover), Alemanha. Em 2014-15 ocupou a cadeira de Lemann Scholar no Centro de Estudos Latino-americanos David Rockefeller de Harvard (DRCLAS), nos EUA. Foi educado como arquiteto e urbanista na Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFRJ (FAU-UFRJ), Brasil, e obteve o título de mestre em urbanismo (cum laude) pela Universidade Técnica de Delft (TU Delft), Holanda.
