Fausto Borém defendeu o Doctor of Musical Arts (University of Georgia, EUA, 1993), o Master of Arts (University of Iowa, EUA, 1990) e o Bacharelado em Música (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 1987).
Prof. Titular da Escola de Música da UFMG onde ensina Contrabaixo, Música de Câmara, Práticas de Performance, Pesquisa em Música, Análise Musical, Didática da Cordas Fricionadas.
Pesquisador do CNPq desde 1994, Coordena os Grupos de Pesquisa ECAPMUS (Estudos em Controle e Aprendizagem Motora na Performance Musical) e PPPMUS ("Pérolas" e "Pepinos" da Performance Musical).
Editor Fundador da Revista Per Musi (Qualis A1 na CAPEs e indexada no SciELO), idealizou e implantou o Mestrado em Música na UFMG.
Organizador e Idealizador do 1º SNNPPM em 2000 (Seminário Nacional de Pesquisa em Performance Musical), o 4º Encontro Internacional de Contrabaixistas (1996), o 2º Concurso Nacional de Composição para Contrabaixo (1996) e o 4º Concurso Internacional de Composição para Contrabaixo (2005). Coordenou duas vezes o Projeto Artista Visitante da UFMG com a Oficina UAKTI (1994) e a Oficina de Luteria de Contrabaixos para Crianças (2002).

The first Brazilian to hold a doctoral degree on Double Bass Performance (University of Iowa and University of Georgia, USA, 1993), Fausto Borém (fborem@ufmg.br) teaches double bass, chamber music, music research and performance practices at the School of Music of UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), Brazil. He has being a Grant Researcher for CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa) since 1994 (see details in www.cnpq.br or www.musica.ufmg.br/~fborem). As a scholar, Fausto Borém has published books, chapters of books and articles in the most distinguished music journals in Brazil and abroad in the fields of music performance, motor behavior, music analysis and musicology. He has edited, published and premiered his compositions and many arrangements of relevant chamber works in distinguished music festivals around the world.
He has received academic awards such as the 2021 ISB (International Society of Bassists) Gary Karr 80-to-90 Project (Nebraska University, USA), the 2019 ISB (International Society of Bassists) Research Grand Prize (Indiana Univeristy, USA), the 2013 ISB (International Society of Bassists) Research Honor Prize (Eastman School of Music, USA), University of Georgia Director´s Award (USA, 1992), UGA Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award (USA, 1993), 3rd Prize in the First National Music Analysis Contest (Brazil, 1995). His chamber "A Didactics of the invention" received 3rd Prize in the 3rd National Double Bass Composition Contest (Brazil, 2000) and presented at the 16th Bienal de Música Contemporânea Brasileira (Brazil, 2005).
As an academic, Fausto Borém created the Music Graduate Program at UFMG (1999) and has worked in most of UFMG?s administrative positions. He organized important national and international events such as 1º SNNPPM (First National Symposium on Music Performance Research, 2000), 4º EINCO (4th International Double Bass Festival, 1996), 2º CNCC (2nd National Composition Contest for the Double Bass, 1996) and 4º CICC (4th International Composition Contest for the Double Bass, 2005). He was the first Coordinator for the UFMG?s Visiting Artist Program (1994, 2002).
As a soloist, Fausto Borém was awarded First Prize in the Jan Fowler Cross Scholarship Competition (USA, 1991), First Prize in the Concurso para Solistas do Teatro Mvnicipal de São Paulo (Brazil, 1997) and Second Prize in the no Concurso Nacional de Cordas (Brazil, 1987). A specialist in Brazilian music, he has been featured as a recitalist and lecturer in international events such as the BASS 2008 (Paris, 2008) International Society of Bassists Conventions in Oklahoma City (EUA, 2007), Kalamazoo-Michigan (EUA, 2005), Sherborne (Inglaterra, 2004), Indianapolis (EUA, 2001), Iowa City (EUA, 1999), Edimburgh (Escócia, 1998), Houston (EUA, 1997), Bloomington (EUA, 1995), Avignon (França, 1994), Interlochen (EUA, 1993) and elsewhere in Brazil.
As a double bassist, Fausto Borém has accompanied classical musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, Menahen Pressler, Yoel Levi, Fábio Mechetti, Luis Otávio Santos, Aylton Escobar and Arnaldo Cohen. He has also played with popular musicians such as Henry Mancini, Bill Mays, Kristin Korb, Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal, UAKTI, Tavinho Moura, Roberto Corrêa and Túlio Mourão. He was principal bassist with the Teatro Mvnicipal de São Paulo Symphony (Brazil, 1996-1997), Orquestra Sinfônica de Minas Gerais (Brazil, 1985-1989) and a member of Savannah Symphony (USA, 1991-1993).
