I received my Ph. D. from Washington University in St. Louis, in 1993 with Prof. Carl M. Bender. Before that, I had obtained a Diplom degree from Kiel University in Germany. From 1993 to 1998 I held postdoctoral positions at Brookhaven National Laboratory, University of Oklahoma, and as a Director's Fellow at the Center for Nonlinear Studies (CNLS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I joined the Department of Physics at Emory University in 1998 as a lecturer, was appointed assistant professor in 2003, associate professor in 2009, and professor in 2016. I have been chair of the Physics Department at Emory University since 2018.
In 2009-2010, I spent a sabbatical as a Fulbright Research Fellow in Germany. In 2013-2014, I was a visiting professor at the South Danish University sponsored by the Villum Foundation. From 2014-2017, I was a visiting professor in the Ciencia Sem Fronteiras program at the Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica (LNCC) in Petropolis. In 2018, I was the Fulbright-FACEPE Distinguished Chair at UFPE in Pernambuco. In 2018, I was also elected Fellow of the American Physical Society.
