Dr Chaves area of animal nutrition research is reduction of methane emissions (greenhouse gases) achieved by supplementing ruminant diets and modifying the ecology of the rumen. This is of high strategic importance to Australian agriculture, with its dependence on ruminants for wool, meat and milk production, which are major export earners for the nation. Australia has struggled to develop and meet appropriate targets for its greenhouse emissions and the national sheep flock and cattle herd are significant contributors to gas production. Strategies that provide a competitive lead in reducing methane production by cattle and sheep, through new diets, supplements or modification to the rumen ecology, will benefit producers and have potential political value for our position in the global greenhouse negotiations.

Dr Chaves possui graduação em Agronomia (1993) e mestrado em Fitotecnia (Produção Vegetal) pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa (1997), PhD em Animal Science pela Massey University (2004; Nova Zelândia) e pós-doutorado pelo INRA (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) St-Gilles, França. Tem experiência na área de Zootecnia, com ênfase em Nutrição e Alimentação Animal, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: nutrição de ruminantes, manipulação ruminal, sistemas de pastejo rotacionado, suplementação, valor nutritivo de alimentos/forragens, técnicas de incubação in sacco e in vitro, e avaliação de impactos ambientais (know-how em medir emissão de gases estufa (green house gases-GHG) em ruminantes.
