Roberto Schaeffer, Alexandre Szklo

Full Professor of Energy Economics at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with 160 master's/doctoral theses oriented. Holds a PhD in Energy Policy from the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) and is a CNPq Level IA Researcher. Postdoctoral work at UPENN and worked as Visiting Professor/Lecturer in the same institution in 1991-92). Works in the field of Integrated Assessment Models for climate mitigation. Member of the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism Methodology Panel (UNFCCC CDM-Meth Panel) in 2002-11. Member of the Advisory Board of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Accelerating Energy Technology Innovation in 2010-11. Collaborates with the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1998. Since 2013 regularly participates as Lead Author of UNEP Gap Reports and since 2019 participates as Lead Author of UNEP Production Gap Report. External Consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna in 2002-12 and since 2012 has been a member of the Editorial Board of the CRC Press Sustainable Energy Development book series. Associate-editor of Energy-The Internacional Journal since 1999. Member of the International Committee for the Evaluation of research programs in Energy, Transitions to New Technologies, and Mitigation of Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases at the International Institute for Advanced Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria, in 2013. Member of the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) of IIASA in 2014-20, and member of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Sweden in 2014-22. Member of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) of the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) since 2015. Member of the Expert Panel of the project "Energy Transition Commission and Fossil Fuels" from SEI since 2016, and member of the Advisory Board for the Routledge Series in Energy Transitions since November 2016. Member of the SDG7 Technical Group in support of the UN High-level Political Forum 2018 between October 2017 and April 2018. Expert on the "EU High-Level Panel on Decarbonisation" since February 2018. Awarded the Chair of Visiting Researcher in Brazilian Studies, lecturing in five Canadian universities (University of Calgary, University of Western Ontario, Saint Marys University, York University and the Université du Québec à Montreal (UQAM)), with support from the International Development Research Center (IDRC) and Canada's Department of International Relations and Foreign Trade in 2008. Received the Greenvana Greenbest 2012 award in the Personality of the Year category, and the COPPE Giulio Massarani Academic Merit Award 2011. Recipient of the Vale-Capes Honorable Mention for Science and Sustainability Edition 2013, and of the the Vale-Capes Award for Science and Sustainability Edition 2015. Co-recipient, along with other scientists, of the Nobel Peace Prize 2007. "Kleinman Center for Energy Policy Visiting Scholar" at UPENN in 2016. Has over 170 articles in international scientific journals, including high-impact journals as Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Communications, Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability and Science. Elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciency (ABC) and recipient of the "IAMC Award for extraordinary contribution to the field of IAM", both in 2020. As of 2021, Vulnerability, Impacts, Adaptation and Climate Services (VIACS) Advisory Board Member for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). Recipient of the CEBRI 2022 Award. Co-recipient of the 2022 Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, together with other scientists of the IPCC and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Member of the Board of Trustees of the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (FBDS) since 2022, and member of the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA), convened under the auspices of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), since 2023.
