Maurício Antônio Lopes

Mauricio Lopes, a plant geneticist by training, received his BSc degree in Agronomy (1983) from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, his MS degree in Plant Genetics (1989) from Purdue University, Indiana, USA and his PhD in Genetics (1993) from the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA. He was the leader of the Maize Breeding Program (1993-1995) and Head of Research and Development (1995-1999) of the Embrapa Maize and Sorghum Center, in Sete Lagoas, MG, Brazil. From January 2000 to April 2003 he was Head of Research and Development of Embrapa, in Brasilia. From April 2004 to April 2007 he was the Head of Research and Development of Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, a thematic center of Embrapa located in Brasilia. Dr. Lopes´ major scientific contributions include the development and release of improved maize varieties and germplasm, capacity building activities, and many research papers and book chapters. His contributions in R&D strategic planning and management include coordination of the process that led to the development and implementation of Embrapa´s current R&D Management System (SEG); coordination and implementation of a Competitive Grants Process within the Embrapa Management System; scenario and foresight analysis to support strategic planning at Embrapa; implementation of the strategic intelligence platform of Embrapa (Agropensa); implementation of portfolio management; formulation of Embrapa´s performance evaluation platform (Integro), among others. Dr. Lopes served in a number of national and international committees, missions, panels and working groups related to agricultural R&D. From April 2007 to October 2008 he worked at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ? FAO, in Rome, Italy, supporting the implementation of an internationally facilitated platform dedicated to plant breeding capacity building. Dr. Lopes was recipient of the 2007 Embrapa R&D Excellence Award, granted in recognition to his contributions as R&D manager at the Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Center. From October 2009 to April 2011 he was Coordinator of Labex Korea, a program of international cooperation of Embrapa for Asia, developed in partnership with the Rural Development Administration - RDA, the agricultural research organization of South Korea. From March 2007 to October 2012 he was member of the Scientific Council of the Agropolis Foundation, in Montpellier, France. From January 2013 to December 2016, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, in Bonn ? Germany. From 2013 to 2018 he was member of the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition, in London. Since 2015 he is member of the International Advisory Committee of the Global Bioeconomy Council, Berlin, Germany. In 2014 he was awarded the Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN ? USA and the Ordre du Mérite Agricole, conferred by the French Republic for his outstanding contribution to world agriculture. In 2015 he was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Agriculture. In 2017 he was awarded the Medal of the Rio Branco Order, in the degree of Comendador, by the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Brazil. In 2018 he was awarded the title of ?Doctor of Agriculture Honoris Causa? by Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN - USA. From April 2011 to October 2012, he was the Executive Director of Research and Development of Embrapa, in Brasilia, Brazil. From October 2012 to October 2018 he was the President of Embrapa, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Organization. From December 2018 to December 2019 he was Guest Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis ? IIASA in Austria. Currently a member of the Advisory Group to the Director General of FAO, in Rome; member of the Advisory Council of the CNA/Senar System; president of the Steering Committee of the Research Portfolio in Energy, Chemistry and Biomass Technology.

Maurício Antônio Lopes foi Presidente da Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária - Embrapa, por dois termos consecutivos, de outubro 2012 a outubro 2018. É graduado em Agronomia pela Universidade Federal de Viçosa-UFV (1983), Mestre em Genética pela Universidade de Purdue (1989), Doutor em Biologia Molecular de Plantas pela Universidade do Arizona (1993), pesquisador da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais - EPAMIG, de 1986 a 1989 e pesquisador da Embrapa de 1989 até o presente. Atuou como melhorista e líder do programa de melhoramento de milho da Embrapa Milho e Sorgo. Destacou-se pelo trabalho em desenvolvimento de populações, variedades, linhagens e híbridos de milho tropical com ênfase em tolerância a alumínio tóxico e eficiência no uso de fósforo. Foi responsável por mapear e caracterizar, pela primeira vez, genes modificadores do endosperma do mutante opaco-2, que impacta qualidade nutricional do milho, e o primeiro a descrever as bases moleculares da mutação floury-2, ambos importantes avanços no conhecimento da base genética e bioquímica do desenvolvimento do endosperma e da qualidade nutricional e física do grão do milho. Foi proponente e coordenado de projetos e plataformas de pesquisa, tendo participado da orientação de estudantes e de diversas bancas de mestrado e doutorado. É autor e co-autor de trabalhos científicos e capítulos de livros, publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais. De 1995 até o presente se dedicou também à gestão de P&D e desenvolvimento institucional da Embrapa e outras instituições nacionais e internacionais. Como gestor de duas Unidades de Pesquisa, gestor do Departamento de P&D, Diretor Executivo de P&D e Presidente da Embrapa liderou múltiplos processos de desenvolvimento institucional, desde a organização e consolidação de Núcleos Temáticos e Portfólios de PD&I, à formulação e a implementação do atual sistema de gestão de P&D da Embrapa (SEG), de sua plataforma de inteligência estratégica (Agropensa), de seu sistema de avaliação de planejamento e desempenho (Integro), de Unidades Mistas de Pesquisa (UMIPs) dentre outras inovações gerenciais que contribuem para fortalecer a imagem de liderança e contemporaneidade da Embrapa. Desenvolveu ampla interação e colaboração com a academia, indústria, ministérios, agências, bancos de desenvolvimento, organizações multilaterais de desenvolvimento e plataformas de pesquisa e inovação. Em 2014, recebeu o Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award da Universidade de Purdue, West Lafayette, IN - EUA, e o Ordre du Mérite Agricole, conferido pela República Francesa por sua excelente contribuição para a agricultura mundial. Em 2015, foi eleito membro da Academia Brasileira de Agricultura. Em 2017, foi agraciado com a Medalha da Ordem Rio Branco, no grau de Comendador, pelo Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Brasil. Em 2018, recebeu o título de "Doutor em Agricultura Honoris Causa" pela Universidade Purdue, West Lafayette, IN - EUA. Com experiências profissionais na Europa e Ásia, trabalhou como Cientista Visitante na Organização das Nações Unidas para Alimentação e Agricultura FAO, em Roma, como Coordenador e Pesquisador do Labex Coréia, programa de cooperação internacional da Embrapa na Ásia e Cientista Visitante no International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, em Laxemburg na Áustria. Atualmente é membro do Grupo Assessor ao Diretor Geral da FAO, em Roma, do Conselho Consultivo do Sistema CNA/Senar, presidente do Comitê Gestor do Portfólio de Pesquisa em Energia, Química e Tecnolgia de Biomassa da Embrapa e pesquisador da Embrapa Agroenergia, contribuindo para a integração da agricultura à Bioeconomia.
