Everton Falcão de Oliveira

I am Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health in the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and in the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Research Program at Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), Brazil. I am currently the Vice Coordinator of the Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Research Program (MSc and PhD programs) at UFMS. My main area of research has been infectious and parasitic diseases, particularly vector-borne diseases as visceral leishmaniasis and Zika. I have carried out studies on the ecology of parasite-vector interactions (Leihmania parasites and phlebotomine sand flies) and, most recently, on the clinical and epidemiological features of pregnant women infected by Zika virus in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. This last project is a cohort study which also addresses the evaluation of risk factors associated with Zika infection and congenital Zika virus syndrome. Additionally, my work has focused on clinical and epidemiological features studies for syphilis and ZIKA virus perinatal infection. I have been Principal Investigator (studies on Zika and syphilis) or Co-Principal Investigator (ecology of parasite-vector interactions) in these research projects. I have experience in molecular diagnostic techniques (especially PCR) acquired during the doctorate degree at Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (USP). I am also the lead PI of two studies that address spatial data analysis of some infectious diseases, mainly the spatial distribution pattern and correlation of incidence with socioeconomic, demographic and environmental variables in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul. The main diseases we are focusing in this area are visceral leishmaniasis, syphilis, whooping cough, and Zika.
