Laura Murray is an Assisstant Professor in the Center on Public Policy in Human Rights at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro where she coordinates a research group on Sexualiy, Politics and Images, and is also a part of the Post Graduate Program in Human Rights. Laura's work focuses on gender, sexuality, stigma, social movements and critical analyses of the State-civil society relations. She graduated from Wellesley College (2000) with a degree in Political Science and Women's Studies, has a Masters in International Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2005) and a PhD in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University (2015). At Coumbia, she completed a certificate in Women's Studies from the Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWAG) - Columbia University (2011) and was a Gender, Sexuality and Health Training Program Fellow in the Sociomedical Sciences Department of Columbia University (2012-2013; 2014-2015). From 2016-2018, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Institute of Social Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (IMS/UERJ). She is part of the Davida Collective, a collaborator of the Brazilian Network of Prostitutes and an executive researcher with the Prostitution Policy Watch (Observatório da Prostituicão) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. A filmmaker, she directed the documentary, "A Kiss for Gabriela", about Gabriela Leite (2013).
Laura é Professora Ajunta no Núcleo de Políticas Públicas em Direitos Humanos (NEPP-DH) da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Ela fez pós-doc no Instituto de Medicina Social da UERJ onde desenvolveu pesquisas na àrea da Antropologia do Estado, da Sexualidade e da Saúde com foco nos temas de políticas públicas, burocracia, ativismo, HIV/AIDS e prostituição. Fez graduação em Political Science and Women's Studies de Wellesley College (2000), mestrado em International Health do Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (2005) e doutorado no Medical Anthropology track do Department of Sociomedical Sciences - Columbia University (2015). Foi Editora Executiva da revista Global Public Health de 2018-2020. Faz parte do Coletivo Davida, a Rede Brasileira de Prostitutas e é pesquisadora do Observatorio da Prostituição (LeMetro/IFCS e IPPUR/UFRJ). é editora da Metaxy: Revista Brasileira de Cultura e Política em Direitos Humanos e coordena o Laboratório de Pesquisa Direitos, Corporeidades e Políticas de Imagem (LaDCoPI) no NEPP-DH. Documentarista, é diretora e cinegrafista do documentário, "Um Beijo para Gabriela" sobre a Gabriela Leite (2013) e a exibição audio-visual, "O que você não vê: A prostituição vista por nós mesmas".
