Dr Vimieiro is an experienced data scientist working with development and application of data mining and machine learning methods to problems in bioinformatics, social sciences and engineering. He is an expert in frequent pattern mining, clustering and classification. Dr Vimieiro was awarded his PhD degree by The University of Newcastle, Australia, in December 2012. He is affiliated with the Centre for Bioinformatics, Biomarker Discovery & Information-based Medicine, Hunter Medical Research Institute, and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, where he applies data mining to biomedical data, particularly those from genomic and transcriptomic studies.
He obtained his masters degree from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. UFMG is one of the best universities in Brazil. Its strong emphasis in research attracted Google to the region, who established its hub in Latin America a few kilometres from UFMG's campus. His bachelor degree was also obtained from one several-time-award-winning university, Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC-Minas). He started his data science career at this institution, where he collaborated with researchers from the Energy Company of Minas Gerais (CEMIG), Brazil, to model the efficiency of solar collectors and photovoltaic panels using machine learning methods.
